Ahearn Leads BayHawks to Three-Game Sweep of Thunderbirds

Erie, Pennsylvania, Sunday, February 13, 2011 - Blake Ahearn's career-best 39 points and clutch free throw shooting led the Erie BayHawks to a three-game sweep of the New Mexico Thunderbirds on Sunday at Tullio Arena. Erie tied a franchise record by extending their win streak to eight games and improved to 23-9, defeating New Mexico 120-115.

Ahearn was scorching hot, hitting all 18 of his free throw attempts to go along with 9-of-16 shooting from the field.

The BayHawks cruised in the first quarter outscoring the Thunderbirds 37-23. Erie maintained their lead in the second and by halftime Ivan Johnson had 19 points and Ahearn added 18.

But in the second half the Thunderbirds came storming back, as Shane Edwards dropped in 14 in the third frame as New Mexico turned out a 36-21 quarter to even things up at 86 apiece heading into the fourth frame.

A tight fourth quarter left Erie with a one point in the final minute, but the T-Birds were forced to foul Ahearn, a 99% free throw shooter. He hit four free throws in the final 11 seconds of the game, making him 78-of-79 from the stripe on the season.

Five BayHawks scored in double-figures. In addition to Ahearn, Tasmin Mitchell finished with 24, Johnson had 19, Kyle Spain added 13 and Kyle Goldcamp chipped in 10.

The Thunderbirds, who dropped to 14-21, were led by Edwards who finished with 20, Abdulai Julloh added 18, Dar Tucker notched 17, Marcus Hubbard chipped in 16, Nik Raivio had 12 and Kevin Lyde dropped 11.

Both teams have the next ten days off for the League's annual All-Star break.
