The New York Red Bulls defeated Hartford Athletic, 2-1, in the third round of the 2022 U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night at Trinity Health Stadium and will move onto the fourth round of the competition.

The Red Bulls opened the scoring in the 18th minute, when midfielder Luquinhas played a ball out wide to winger Lewis Morgan, who's attempt was sent to the bottom left corner to give New York the lead.

New York doubled their lead in the 25th minute, after a corner delivered in Hartford's eighteen-yard box found the foot of Frankie Amaya, who volleyed the ball off the post and defender Aaron Long was there to tap in the rebound.

Hartford answered back in the 52nd minute, when midfielder Danny Barrera played a ball from a free-kick to the top of New York's eighteen-yard box and midfielder Conor McGlynn fired a shot to the bottom left corner.

Morgan scored in his first career appearance in the Open Cup, while recording his fourth goal of the season in all competitions, which leads the club.

Luquinhas registered his first career assist in Open Cup play, and his second across all competitions this season.

Long scored his second career Open Cup goal and his first since June 6, 2018, against New York City FC.

The Oak Hills, California native has now tallied two goals across all competitions for the Red Bulls this season.

The Red Bulls are now 16-8-0 in their opening round matches of the U.S. Open Cup in franchise history, including 4-1-0 in their last five.

Goalkeeper Ryan Meara made his 14th career U.S. Open Cup appearance in net, which is the most by a player in franchise history.

Meara earned his eighth career win in U.S. Open Cup play.

New York are now 4-0-0 on the road this season across all competitions, outscoring their opponents, 10-3, in those matches.

Dru Yearwood, Dylan Nealis, Sean Nealis, John Tolkin, Tom Edwards, and Zach Ryan all made their U.S. Open Cup debuts in the match tonight.

The Red Bulls defense has only allowed three goals in four games on the road this season across all competitions.

Following Wednesday's match, New York will continue MLS regular season action on the road for two matches, with the first match coming against Orlando City SC on Sunday, April 24. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN and New York Red Bulls Radio in English and Spanish via TuneIn, the New York Red Bulls app and NewYorkRedBulls.com.
