Red Bull New York News Release

The top ranked New York Red Bulls put their four-match (3-0-1) unbeaten streak on the line Saturday, August 10 at 7:30 PM when they travel to Crew Stadium to face off with conference foe, the Columbus Crew.

The Red Bulls claimed first place in the Eastern Conference after defeating Sporting Kansas City, 3-2, in a top of the table clash on August 3 at Sporting Park. Jonny Steele put New York ahead in the 27th minute when he took a through ball from Dax McCarty and sliding it inside the near post. After Sporting KC's Kei Kamara answered before the close of the first half, MLS Player of the Week Lloyd Sam assisted on a Fabian Espindola goal in the 63th minute and scored one of his own in the 69th minute. Sam's tally resulted following a beautiful sequence that began with goalkeeper Luis Robles' long throw to Steele, who then found the Englishman in Sporting's defensive end. The Red Bulls sit atop the Eastern Conference with 38 points and a two-point lead over Sporting Kansas City. New York has not dropped a contest since a 2-0 July 4 loss to the Colorado Rapids.

The Crew enters this contest having lost their last three contests, the most recent coming in a 3-1 defeat to the Houston Dynamo on August 3 at BBVA Compass Stadium. After going down two goals in the first half, Houston's Kofi Sarkodie scored an own goal in the 75th minute that gave Columbus an opening. However they could not capitalize and Houston's Cam Weaver would score 85th minute to seal the victory. The Crew is in eighth place in the Eastern Conference with 23 points and a 6-11-5 record.

This is the third and final meeting between the two sides. The last time these two clubs met was back on May 26, when the Red Bulls came from behind to earn a 2-2 tie at Red Bull Arena to extend their MLS unbeaten streak to seven games. After Dominic Oduro gave Columbus the lead two minutes into the match, Thierry Henry evened the score 29 minutes later with a chip over Columbus keeper Andy Gruenebaum. Columbus again took the lead when Red Bull Kosuke Kimura was ruled to have fouled Justin Meram inside the penalty box and Federico Higuain converted the spot kick. However, defender Jamison Olave would provide the late game heroics for the Red Bulls when he controlled Steele's high cross and powered the ball past Gruenebaum to give the New York Club the draw and a point. On May 4 at Crew Stadium, Tim Cahill's 80th minute goal was enough for the Red Bulls to earn a 1-0 win.

New York is 25-23-8 all-time against Columbus and 11-14-3 on the road. The Red Bulls are unbeaten in their last six against the Crew, going 3-0-3 in that span.
