Red Bulls Midfielder Lloyd Sam Voted MLS Player of the Week

NEW YORK - New York Red Bulls midfielder Lloyd Sam was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for week 23 of the 2013 MLS season.

Entering the game in the 60th minute, Lloyd Sam provided an assist and a goal in a 10 minute period to help the New York Red Bulls defeat Sporting Kansas City 3-2 in front of a record crowd of 21, 304 fans at Sporting Park.

In the 63rd minute, Sam collected a ball on the right side of the field and slotted it down the flank to Fabian Espindola, who left-footed the ball past Jimmy Nielsen to the far post, giving the Red Bulls a 2-1 lead.

Sam scored the eventual game-winning goal moments later in the 69th minute. New York goalkeeper Luis Robles started off the fast break with a lengthy throw to the feet of Jonny Steele, who curled a pass to Sam as he streaked down the right flank. After a quick cutback, Sam blasted home a left-footed strike.

The New York Red Bulls are back in action Saturday, August 10 when they take on the Columbus Crew at Crew Stadium (7:30 pm ET, MLS Live).
