Columbus Crew SC News Release
The New York Red Bulls knocked Sporting Kansas City out of first place as there were no ties throughout the Eastern Conference in Week 23.
Here is how the table looks during the first week of August.
1. New York Red Bulls - 38 pts. - Week 23: 3-2 Win at Sporting Kansas City
The Red Bulls, even without Tim Cahill, have earned statement wins the past two weeks with wins over fellow heavyweights Real Salt Lake and Sporting Kansas City. Thierry Henry and New York look to keep things rolling when they visit the Crew on Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET / FOX Sports Ohio).
2. Sporting Kansas City - 36 pts. - Week 23: 3-2 Loss vs. New York
Not only did Sporting lose to New York at home, but they lost Graham Zusi to injury in the MLS All-Star Game on Wednesday as well. Now Kansas City has to juggle CONCACAF Champions League play while it keeps its eye on the MLS Supporters' Shield Race. Sporting hosts the New England Revolution in Week 24.
3. Montreal Impact - 35 pts. - Week 23: 3-1 Loss at D.C. United
A winner in just two of its last nine matches, the Montreal Impact may have hit rock bottom with a 3-1 loss to last-place D.C. United over the weekend. Something's gone wrong north of the border and if it's not fixed soon, the Impact could see itself on the outside looking in come September. Montreal travels to Chicago for a Saturday match with the Fire.
4. Philadelphia Union - 34 pts. - Week 23: 2-1 Loss vs. Chicago Fire
Philadelphia is staying afloat despite Jack McInerney's two-month scoring drought. The Union will look to rebound this weekend as it hosts D.C. United on Saturday.
5. Houston Dynamo - 33 pts. - Week 23: 3-1 Win vs. Columbus Crew
Will Bruin was welcomed back to the lineup from Gold Cup duty and earned a goal and an assist against the Crew on Saturday to help the Dynamo to its third win in four games. Houston will look to extend its four-match unbeaten streak as it travels to Supporters' Shield leader Real Salt Lake on Saturday.
6. New England Revolution - 30 pts. - Week 23: 1-0 Loss vs. Toronto FC
The Revolution was never able to recover from a second-minute Matïÿý - as Laba goal as New England fell at home on Sunday. The Revs travel to Kansas City for Week 24 action.
7. Chicago Fire - 28 pts. - Week 23: 2-1 Win at Philadelphia Union
Midseason acquisition Mike Magee has emerged as an early favorite for the 2013 MLS MVP award with his League-leading 14 goals, his latest coming as the winner on Saturday in Philadelphia. The Fire can put itself in the playoff discussion for the first time all season as it welcomes the struggling Montreal Impact to the Windy City on Saturday.
8. Columbus Crew - 23 pts. - Week 23: 3-1 Loss at Houston Dynamo
The Crew lost its sixth out of its past seven matches as it fell to the Dynamo on Saturday. The Black & Gold will look to earn its first points since July 7 when it hosts the New York Red Bulls on Saturday.
9. Toronto FC - 20 pts. - Week 23: 1-0 Win at New England Revolution
The Reds won their second-straight match, this time the winner coming in the second minute of play rather than stoppage time. Toronto FC has a chance to make it three in a row as it travels to Seattle for a bout with the Sounders on Saturday night.
10. D.C. United - 13 pts. - Week 23: 3-1 Win vs. Montreal Impact
With the club's preseason goals down the drain, Ben Olsen has to be ecstatic to see new signings Luis Silva, Conor Doyle and Jared Jeffery score in Saturday's win. Newly signed Homegrown Player Collin Martin notched an assist in his debut. For a season that has been dismal so far, the future is looking bright for United.
