Evansville Otters News Release

Evansville, IN - John Ducey was nearly untouchable Thursday night, going the distance but picking up the loss in the Otters 3-1 defeat to the River City Rascals at Bosse Field.

Ducey suffered through only one bad inning, walking Chris Colton to lead off the second. One batter later Andy Reilly singled and Pete Paris doubled in both runners. Paris later scored on a two-out double by Joe Chavarria. In the eight other innings, Ducey faced the minimum of three batters per inning. Chad Maddox singled leading off in the first inning, but after a fielder's choice, Ducey got Scott Robinson to ground into an inning ending double play. Jorge Gutierrez singled leading off the fifth, but after another fielder's choice and a line out, Chavarria was caught stealing to end the inning. The Georgia native retired the last 13 Rascals in a row to end the game. In total, Ducey gave up three earned runs on five hits, walking one and striking out six. Unfortunately, he fell to 1-5, losing his third consecutive start.

Rascals' starter Jake Laber was equally impressive for seven innings. The Otters managed only three hits and walk in the first seven frames, before putting the first two runners on in the eighth and scoring their only run on an Eric Blackwell sacrifice fly. Laber advanced to 5-2, allowing one earned run in 7.2 innings, walking one and striking out seven. Jason Lowey pitched a perfect ninth inning for his ninth save of the year.

With the win, the Rascals swept the Otters for the second time this year, and now hold an 8-1 record against the Otters in 2009. Evansville is now 15.5 games back of the first place Rascals.

A record crowd of 7,782 witnessed the pitcher's duel, and stuck around for the fireworks display afterwards.

The Otters (11-28) will head to Southern Illinois Friday to begin a three game set with the Miners. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm CDT.
