Lake Erie Crushers News Release
Avon, OH - The Lake Erie Crushers picked up their third win in a row on Friday night as they rallied two separate times to defeat the Florence Freedom in ten innings by the final of 4-3 at All Pro Freight Stadium. Andrew Davis sent the more than 4,900 fans home happy with an RBI double down the right field line that scored Brad Griffiths and Jodam Rivera with two outs against Freedom right-hander Nolan Shaffer. "He threw me a couple of sliders that I fouled off and then came back with one that caught a little bit of the plate and I just tried to put a good swing on it and hit it hard," said Davis afterwards.
The two teams competed in a pitcher's duel for much of the night as starters Paul Fagan and Moises Melendez traded zeroes on the scoreboard. Florence would break the scoreless tie in the fifth inning on a two-run home run by Justin Pickett. It would stay a 2-0 Freedom advantage until the bottom of the ninth, when the Crushers rallied to send the game into extra innings. Davis' sacrifice bunt scored Rivera to make it 2-1 and then Lake Erie would tie the game on a wild pitch that scored pinch-runner Jesse Gibson.
Pickett struck again in the top of the tenth with two outs as he hit a solo homer to left off of Crusher reliever J.J. Pacella to temporarily give Florence a 3-2 lead. Thanks to Davis' heroics, Pacella picked up his second win of the season, while Shaffer took the loss. "It was quite a baseball game," said Crusher Manager John Massarelli. "We saw a classic pitcher's duel with two starters at the top of their games and I was pleased with the way we executed there at the end."
The Crushers improve to 23-16 on the season and will return to action on Independence Day night as they'll play game two against the Freedom. Brent Lysander will start for Lake Erie against Florence's Everett Saul.
