Nathanson Fires Complete Game but Beach Bums Fall

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums dropped the opener of a series with the Midwest Sliders of Ypsilanti by the score of 1-0 at Wuerfel Park on Friday night.

David Nathanson threw the first complete game of his three-year professional career but was saddled with the hard luck loss. He scattered six hits and struck out a career high eight while walking one and striking out three.

Nathanson allowed only one run, in the second inning. Gil Zayas was hit by a pitch and scored on a two-out double off the bat of Clay McCord.

The Beach Bums struggled against Midwest starter James Albury. Albury tossed six shutout innings but dodged trouble in the bottom of the third. Traverse City loaded the bases with no outs as Andrew Barbaro and Andrew Stafford singled. Al Barbato was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Stephen Douglas. Douglas hit flew out to left that appeared to tie the game. As the throw came home, Al Barbato tagged up towards second but was thrown out. Midwest appealed to third and Andrew Barbaro was called out for leaving early to close the inning.

Brian Lapin, Andrew Barbaro, and Andrew Stafford posted hits for the Beach Bums. Albury improved to 5-1 for the Sliders by striking out four and allowing just three hits. Arshwin Asjes pitched the ninth to record his third save.

The Beach Bums will continue the series tomorrow with a Fourth of July extravaganza when they wear special patriotic uniforms. RHP Brett Bostelman (5-0, 2.27) gets the ball for the Beach Bums opposite RHP Jeff Fischer (1-0, 6.00), who will make his first start for the Sliders. Besides the Fourth of July, the Beach Bums will also host Military Welcome Home and Armed Forces Appreciation Night. A special pregame ceremony to honor veterans and active servicemen and women will take place on the field at 6:15 so arrive early. Gates open at 5:05pm.
