Red Deer Rebels News Release

EDMONTON - Playoffs are often seen as ‘the new season.' And it's safe to say that, after Saturday's 5-1 loss to the Edmonton Oil Kings, the Red Deer Rebels are looking for anything new. Because Saturday's game at Rexall Place was the Rebels last regular season game. The Rebels end up in fourth place of the WHL's Eastern Conference with a 39-36-5-2 record for 85 points. They open the first round of playoffs Friday at the Enmax Centrium against the Prince Albert Raiders.

The Rebels had several regulars out of the line-up Saturday night, including MATT DUMBA, TURNER ELSON, BRADY GAUDET and BROOKS MAXWELL.

First period

The Oil Kings opened the scoring 2:50 in when Cole Benson slammed home a rebound after Edmonton defencman Griffin Reinhart unloaded a rocket from the point. But the Rebels tied the game 1-1 75 seconds later when Edmonton goaltender Tristian Jarry misplayed the puck behind the Oil King net. TYSON NESS wheeled up to grab the loose puck on the right side of the Edmonton net and tapped in his 19th of the year. Red Deer was outshot 11-7 in the opening period.

Second period

The Oil Kings were pressuring the Rebels and BOLTON POULIOT had to be sharp on several occasions to keep the game tied. Then, on the powerplay, an extra effort by Edmonton's Trevor Cheek, the Oil Kings took a 2-1 lead at 12:40. Edmonton's Curtis Lazar went coast-to-coast with two and a half minutes left in the period two give the Oil Kings a 3-1 lead. Edmonton grabbed the pulse of the game and outshot the Rebels 21-6 in the middle frame.

Third period

Things didn't get much easier for the Rebels in the early going of the final frame: Edgars Kulda and Mitch Moroz scored in a 62-second span. The Rebels outshot Edmonton 15-9 in the final frame. Throughout 60 minutes the Rebels were outshot 42-28.
