November 15, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Red Deer Rebels News Release
Red Deer Rebels fans are being encouraged to help support victims of domestic and gender-based violence when they come to the Peavey Mart Centrium this Friday, November 19.
The Alberta Council of Women's Shelters (ACWS) will be in the Telus Community Corner while the Rebels take on the Calgary Hitmen. They'll be bringing awareness to Leading Change - a call to action to prevent domestic and gender-based violence in the province - and accepting grocery store gift cards to help local families affected by such violence.
"November is Family Violence Prevention Month," explains Joe Campbell, Leading Change Community Developer.
"We're working to spread awareness around what people can do in their communities in their day-to-day lives to help really prevent gender-bases violence from happening, and also to bring awareness to how we can create a more supportive environment for people who are experiencing domestic violence, especially during tough times, like right now."

As part of Leading Change, Campbell says they've been working with men's groups and sports teams "to really empower them to get the skills in order to be leaders in that community, to speak out against violence, and work towards creating a culture change that will allow not allow for domestic violence to exist."
Campbell says grocery store gift cards are a great way to help local families working on a fresh start, and is hopeful that Rebels fans will step up in a big way.
"Most grocery stores carry often more than just food. Families need clothes, toiletries, medicine and much more. And with the holidays around the corner, grocery stores have even more in stock to help families really restart their lives and start their new chapter on the right foot."
Friday's game at the Peavey Mart Centrium goes at 7 p.m. with doors opening at 6 p.m. Tickets are available through Tickets Alberta.
