Rebels Among League Leaders in Various Categories at Halfway Point of Season
January 4, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Red Deer Rebels News Release
The Rebels have entered an unfortunate pandemic pause, confident that their 2021-22 WHL season will recommence in the near future.
While the COVID-19 delay isn't surprising, neither is the team's record of 7-1-1-1 in the last 10 games.
Four of those victories have come on the road, where Red Deer has excelled all season. Only the Winnipeg Ice, with 13, have posted more road wins than the Rebels, whose 12 victories on the highway are tied for second in the league, along with Kamloops and Seattle.
The Rebels have boosted their overall record to 22-9-2-1 with their recent run, good for second place in the Central Division and third in the Eastern Conference with their season exactly at the halfway point. Their win-loss percentage of .691 is fifth-best in the league and the team is also fifth in goals scored with 122.
Red Deer's specialty teams have also impressed. The Rebels' power play is fifth best in the league at 24.5 per cent and their penalty kill is - again - fifth overall at 81.8 per cent.
On a slightly negative note, the team is fourth overall in penalty minutes at 13.7 minutes per game, but that's an improvement over earlier in the season when the Rebels were the league's most penalized team.
On an individual level, two Rebels - linemates Arshdeep Bains and Ben King - have averaged more than a point per game this season. Bains is seventh in league scoring with 44 points and King is 11th with 38.
In addition, King's 22 goals are third-best in the WHL and he leads the league with 12 power play tallies. Bains, meanwhile, is third in the league with 28 assists.
On the back end, Christoffer Sedoff (pictured above) is fourth among WHL defencemen in scoring with 29 points and is tied for fourth overall with 27 assists.
In goal, Connor Ungar is third overall with a goals-against average of 2.06 and Chase Coward is sixth at 2.42. Ungar's save percentage of .925 is third-best in the league and Coward is ninth among WHL netminders at .915.
On another note, three players - Kai Uchacz, Ethan Rowland and Coward- remain on the Rebels' injury list after Matteo Fabrizi and Josh Medernach returned to action last week.
Uchacz (lower body) and Rowland (upper body) are out indefinitely and Coward (lower body) is listed as day-to-day.
