Reading Rally Not Enough in the Ninth

July 29, 2021 - Eastern League (EL)
Reading Fightin Phils News Release

The Reading Fightin Phils fell to the Somerset Patriots 7-5 on Thursday evening. Matt Kroon had a three-hit evening. Jack Conley and Madison Stokes combined to make one of the most interesting and exciting double plays happen. The duo caught a runner stealing second and then went back to nab a Patriot sneaking home.

The game began in a 30-minute rain delay, but that did not disturb the routine of the starters. A true pitcher's duel, the run scoring did not begin until the fifth inning.

Reading struck first as an RBI single from Grenny Cumana plated Brock Stassi. Then, Kroon's single scored Cumana. A wild pitch allowed Luke Miller to score as well to give the Fightins a 3-0 lead.

Oswaldo Cabrera cut into the lead with a two run home run.

In the top of the seventh Dermis Garcia crushed a grand slam out to left field giving the Patriots a 6-3 lead.

Reading battled to score a run in the bottom of eighth with a sacrifice fly from Miller that brought Bryson Stott home.

Somerset added an insurance run on in the top of the ninth to make it 7-4.

The R-Phils weren't done yet as Conley belted a solo shot in the bottom half cutting Somerset's lead down to two. Stokes drove in Stott with an RBI single to put the Fightins within one run of the Patriots. Reading loaded the bases but couldn't get another run across.

James McArthur took the ball for his first start since June 20th. He was exceptional throwing four innings allowing just two hits and notching four strikeouts. He handed the ball over to Tyler Carr. Carr let up a two run shot but recorded three strikeouts. Carlo Reyes allowed the grand slam to Dermis Garcia. However, none of the runs were earned as an error extended the inning. Jonathan Hennigan threw two innings of work allowing one run on one hit.
