Reading Fightin Phils News Release
The Reading Fightin Phils dropped Wednesday's contest 6-1 against the Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox). Portland scored early and often throughout the contest and never relinquished its lead.
Jhailyn Ortiz broke up the shutout on the first pitch of the bottom of the ninth inning. He crushed a solo home run to center field for the Fightins only run. Wendell Rijo, Josh Ockimey and Jack Conley each tallied a hit.
The Sea Dogs loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the third inning. They scored the game's first run on a sacrifice fly but that's the only run they scored in the inning.
Portland broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning. James McArthur retired the first two batters he faced with a strikeout and a flyout. After a fielding error allowed David Hamilton to reach first base, the Sea Dogs hit back-to-back homers, making their lead 4-0.
Ockimey walked and Conley hit a single to open the bottom half of the inning. A pop out and a double play ended the inning.
A two-run shot in the top of the seventh inning extended Portland's lead to six runs.
Ortiz opened the bottom of the ninth inning with a solo shot, making the score 6-1. Rijo followed with a single and Logan O'Hoppe walked with one out. A double play ended the game.
McArthur took the loss on the mound in Wednesday's game. He gave up six runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits. He struck out seven batters.
Jack Perkins pitched the final 2.2 innings. He gave up just one hit and held the Sea Dogs scoreless.
The Fightins will play at FirstEnergy Stadium next on June 16 at 7:00 PM.
