Reading Fightin Phils News Release
For the second-straight game, the Reading Fightin Phils and the Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox) traded blows in a close game. The Fightin Phils scored first in Thursday's contest but the Sea Dogs responded and took a two-run lead over the next two frames. Despite putting several runners on base, Reading couldn't bring across more runs in the tight contest and fell 3-1.
Jonathan Guzman stayed hot at the plate as he tallied three hits while playing strong defense at shortstop. Five Reading pitchers combined for eight strikeouts but the Fightins left 12 runners on base in Thursday's contest.
Johan Rojas walked to lead off the first inning. He stole second, his fiftieth bag of the season, then advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Kevin Vicuna plated Rojas with an RBI groundout to give the R-Phils an early edge.
The Sea Dogs took the lead in the following frame. Tyler Dearden drove a run home on a single and advanced to second on a fielding error. He scored two batters later on a single by Elih Marrero.
The lead increased to two runs as Portland plated another on a sacrifice fly in the third inning.
Reading had at least one baserunner in the next three frames but couldn't bring any of them home. In eighth inning, Rijo and Aldrem Corredor walked with two outs but a strikeout ended the frame.
Andrew Schultz and Reading's defense held the Sea Dogs scoreless in the top of the ninth. Guzman kept the team alive with a hit in the bottom half with two outs. However, a strikeout ended the game.
Aidan Anderson took the spot start out of the bullpen. He gave up two runs on three hits through two innings.
McKinley Moore pitched the next two frames. He relinquished up one run on one hit while striking out three.
Tyler McKay hurled two-scoreless frames and fanned two.
Taylor Lehman came in for the next two innings. He allowed two hits, but kept the visitors off the board. Lehman also got two strikeouts.
Schultz pitched a clean ninth frame. He didn't allow a runner to reach and struck out one.
The Fightins will play at FirstEnergy Stadium next on August 19 at 7:00 PM.
