Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI - Brock Hooton scored the lone goal of the hockey game 15:48 into the third period to give Reading a 1-0 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones Thursday night. The win gives the Royals a three games to two edge over the Cyclones in the best of seven series for the North Division championship.
Danny Taylor turned aside 43 shots to record the shutout for Reading. Cedrick Desjardins took the defeat for Cincinnati, stopping 24 of the 25 shots he faced.
The first period ended scoreless, but Cincinnati had its chances. The Cyclones had six power play chances-but could not score with 11:25 of man-advantage time. The Cyclones outshot Reading in the opening frame, 15-7.
The second period remained scoreless, but both teams had chances in the frame. Reading's Malcolm MacMillan, serving his third penalty of the game, came out of the box and got loose on a shorthanded situation that was thwarted by Cedrick Desjardins. Cincinnati's chance came on a power play scramble when Thomas Beaurgeard fired a shot off the goalpost from along the left side goal line. The shots on goal again favored the Cyclones, 17-9.
Hooton's goal came on the only power play awarded in the third period to register the only score of the night. Patrik Hersley and Shawn Collymore had the assists on the score.
This was the fifth game of the best-of-seven North Division Finals. It is the third time in team history that the squad has reached this stage of the Kelly Cup playoffs and second straight year that is has occurred. The Cyclones (55-12-5) were the North Division, American Conference and Brabham Cup (best overall ECHL regular season record) champions. Reading (38-26-6), which was seeded third, upended second-seeded Elmira in a six game series that ended more than a week ago to advance to this round. Game six of the series will be played at Reading on Saturday (May 3) at 7pm and would be broadcast on 96 Rock. If a seventh game is needed, it would be played at U.S. Bank Arena on Monday night (May 5) at 7:30pm.
