Trenton Devils Schedule Announced
May 1, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ (May 1, 2008) - The ECHL announced its schedule for the 2008-09 regular season.
For the first time since its inaugural campaign in 1999-2000, Trenton will take on the Johnstown Chiefs in its opening game, slated for Friday, October 17 at 7:30pm. That contest will also mark the eighth straight year that Trenton has opened its regular season schedule at Sovereign Bank Arena.
The Devils' home schedule shows 30 weekend dates and just six games on weekdays. There will be 12 Friday contests, ten Saturday bouts, and eight matches on Sundays. Faceoffs are set for 7:30pm on Fridays, 7:00pm on Saturdays, and 4:00pm on Sundays. All other contests will start at 7:00pm. All times are subject to change.
Trenton takes on their arch-rivals, the Reading Royals, 12 times over the course of the season. The Devils host the Pennsylvania squad for back-to-back games on two different weekends: December 19-20 and February 6-7. The Capital City squad will also challenge its other North Division foes-the Cincinnati Cyclones, Dayton Bombers, Elmira Jackals, Johnstown Chiefs, and Wheeling Nailers-ten times each.
Looking outside the division, a rematch of Trenton's 2005 Kelly Cup Finals will be played on Sovereign Bank Arena ice, when the Florida Everblades return for two contests on November 29th and December 5th. Trenton defeated Florida 4-2 in the series to win its first ECHL Championship.
The T-Devils then renew their rivalry with the Charlotte Checkers on March 4th and 8th in North Carolina. The Checkers are the only team outside the North Division which Trenton has faced more than 25 times.
Trenton will battle against the South Carolina Stingrays for three games, including home bouts on February 18th and 21st. The Devils also welcome the 2007 Kelly Cup Champion Idaho Steelheads for the first-ever game between the two on Sunday, November 2nd. Games against Augusta and Gwinnett round out the non-divisional schedule.
Unlike the 2007-08 season, Trenton will not spend long stretches of games either home or away. The Devils' longest homestand runs for five games between February 18 and 24, and is immediately followed by a season-high seven-contest road trip to Cincinnati and several South Division opponents.
Beginning in 1988-89 with five teams playing in four states, the ECHL, the Premier âAA' Hockey League, has grown into a coast-to-coast league that will have 24 teams in 16 states and British Columbia playing 864 games from Oct. 17, 2008 to Apr. 4, 2009. Nineteen of the 24 teams have played at least five years in their current city.
The third-longest tenured professional hockey league behind only the National Hockey League and the American Hockey League, the ECHL averaged 4,174 fans per game last season, marking the fourth year in a row and the 16th time in the last 18 years that the league has averaged over 4,000 fans.
The Premier âAA' Hockey League welcomed 3,756,191 fans last year, marking the fifth straight season and the 11th time in the last 12 years that it has exceeded 3.75 million fans. The 51 sold out crowds are the most in the last five seasons and mark the fourth time in the last five years that the ECHL has had at least 40 sellouts.
The conference and division alignments and the format for the 2009 Kelly Cup Playoffs will be determined and approved at a later date by the ECHL Board of Governors.
