February 9, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Just when it looked like the Corpus Christi Rayz had caught the New Mexico Scorpions, the Scorps pulled away. New Mexico scored three goals in five and a half minutes late in the third period on Saturday Night en route to a 5-2 win. Scorpions forward Chris Robertson led the way with a pair of goals handing the Rayz their second straight loss. The Rayz remained in a fifth place tie in the Southern Conference with the Amarillo Gorillas and one point over the Austin Ice Bats for the final playoff spot in the South. The Rayz loss dropped them to 16-24-6 on the year. The Rayz then return to the American Bank Center next Friday and Saturday Night for games against the Laredo Bucks and Odessa Jackalopes. Tickets for both games area available. For more information please call the Rayz at 361.814.PUCK.
The Rayz got the lone goal of the first period when Nick Lindberg capped a three on three rush into the zone with a wrist shot past Andrew Martin from the top of the slot at 8:27. The goal stood through the frame and gave the Rayz a 1-0 lead after the first. New Mexico outshot Corpus Christi 12-8 in the frame.
The Scorpions took the lead in the second period with an early and late goal, both scored from behind the Rayz goal line. First at 2:37 Erik Johnson threw a puck from the right corner towards the crease that deflected off of a skate and trickled through Jason Tapp to tie the score. Then at 18:41 ex-Ray Chris Robertson shot a puck off the back of Tapp and into the net after Tapp had just robbed Konrad Reeder. The goal gave the Scorps their first lead and made it 2-1 New Mexico after two periods of play. The Scorps outshot the Rayz 15-9 in the period.
Latulippe scored 11:40 into the third period to tied the score at 2-2 with an end to end rush and a wrist shot from the top of the left circle. However, on the next shift the Scorpions reclaimed the lead with a Craig MacDonald rebound goal at 12:03. The Scorps added late insurance goals by Robertson and Ray Ortiz to ice the victory.
Jason Tapp made 40 saves on 45 shots and took the loss, dropping to 16-20-5. Martin got the win with 25 saves on 27 shots. His record jumped to 14-8-1. Corpus Christi went 0-5 on the power play and New Mexico was 0-3 on the man advantage. The Scorps outshot the Rayz 45-27.
