Hounds fall to Kings in shootout

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO - The Youngstown SteelHounds fell to the Mississippi RiverKings 6-5 in a shootout on Saturday night. The Hounds are now 1-2-1 on their eight game home stand.

The Hounds jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as Petr Pohl scored his first of two goals on the night at 1:56 of the first period. Steve Makway tied it up with a power play goal at 9:03 to make it 1-1 after 20 minutes.

In the second period Jason Baird tipped a Kurtis Dulle shot past Sebastien Centomo at 3:38 to give the Hounds a 2-1 lead. Pohl added his second of the night at 8:32 to put Youngstown up 3-1. Kings goaltender Sebastien Centomo left the game at 9:15 of the second period due to injury. He made 14 saves on 17 shots. Ian Keserich replaced Centomo and played the rest of the game.

The Kings rallied with Rick Kozak scoring his first of two goals on the night, this on the power play at 11:17 to make it 3-2. The Kings were 2-7 on the power play while Youngstown was 0-7 with the man advantage. The Kings tied it up on a shorthanded goal by Ryan Campbell at 15:58 making it 3-3 after two periods.

In the third period Mississippi continued to roll as Sheldon Wenzel tipped a Derek Landmesser shot past Andy Franck make it a 4-3 game. Wenzel, who had no goals coming into this series, has two goals in his last two games. Landmesser had three assists on the night for the Kings. Chad Woollard seemingly put the game out of reach with a goal at 15:18 to make it 5-3. Youngstown did not go away as Jason Baird added his second of the night at 16:26 to make it a 5-4 game. With an extra attacker on the ice the Hounds tied the game with 45 seconds left thanks to Bryan Lachapelle's third goal of the season to force overtime and the eventual shootout.

In the shootout Keserich stopped three-of-four Youngstown shots while the Kings scored three to take the shootout 3-1 and the game 6-5. Rick Kozak was credited with the game winning goal.

The Hounds are 26-16-3 (55 points) for third place in the Northeast Division and fifth in the Northern Conference. Mississippi is 27-14-2 (57 points) for second place in the Northeast Division. The Kings have taken the last four games of this series and are 6-4-0 against the Hounds. Youngstown is 4-5-1 against the Kings this season.
