Laredo Bucks News Release
AUSTIN, TX- The Laredo Bucks of the Central Hockey League fell to the Austin Ice Bats 4-1 Saturday night, in front of a sell out crowd of 1,900 fans at the Chaparral Ice Arena. The loss was the second straight for the Bucks, and third in a row in Austin.
Laredo falls to 30-15-2 (62 points) overall, and 11-10-2 away from home.
The Bucks outshot the Ice Bats 34-29.
Compared to Friday night's third period, Saturday's first period was tame, as both teams played very defensively keeping it scoreless.
Laredo outshot Austin (18-26-1, 37 points) in the first 20 minutes 10-7, with both goaltenders stopping each shot that came their way. Bucks goaltender John Ceci set aside all seven Ice Bats shots, while Austin netminder Miguel Beaudry stopped all 10 Laredo attempts.
Each team had one power-play opportunity in the opening period, and went 0-1.
Austin took a 3-0 lead in the second period over Laredo.
The Ice Bats took a 1-0 lead 6:16 into the second period, as R.G Flath took a long rebound in the right side of the slot and sent it by Ceci. Austin made it 2-0 at the 12:28 mark when Zech Klann took a feed at the left side of the slot from Taylor Reska and tipped the pass in past Ceci. Ausitn would make it 3-0 when Brendan Cook poked home a rebound from the right side of the crease past Ceci. Cook's goal was on a five-on-three power-play.
The Ice Bats outshot the Bucks in the second period 15-9.
The Bucks pulled to within 3-1 with 1:59 left in the third period when Steve Simoes sent a slap shot from the top of the left circle that deflected past Beaudry. It was Simoes fifth goal of the season and it was unassisted.
After Simoes'goal the Bucks pulled Ceci to gain an extra attacker but Austin's Mike Bartlett sent in an empty net goal from center ice to make it 4-1.
Ceci took the loss in net setting aside 25 of 28 Austin shots, while Beaudry stopped 33 of 34 Bucks attempts.
The Bucks were without the services of forward James Hiebert, who was serving game one of a three game suspension by the league. Hiebert was suspended for a hit in Friday night's game, and he will miss Sunday's game against Austin, and Tuesday's game in Rio Grande Valley.
Bucks all star defenseman Serge Dube missed his second straight game with a stomach virus. Dube may be back in the line up Sunday.
