Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - Four goals in a span of 3:48 paced led the Texas Brahmas to a 6-2 defeat of the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs Saturday night at CenturyTel Center . The loss was Bossier-Shreveport's first in over two months and broke their franchise record home winning streak at 18 games.
Before Scott Sheppard's goal at 19:08 of the second period, the Mudbugs had a 2-1 lead, but by the 2:56 mark of the third, Texas had roared back to take a 4-1 advantage. Three of Texas ' four goals during the critical stretch were on the powerplay.
It didn't take long for the Mudbugs to strike first in this one, converting an early powerplay chance just 1:40 into the contest. Daniel Pegoraro won an offensive zone faceoff back to Tyrel Lucas to start the powerplay and Lucas beat Brett Jaegar with a wrist shot to the top shelf for his team-best 19th goal of the season that gave the âBugs a 1-0 lead. Texas tied the game up later in the first period on a play that ended with Anders Strome's 24th goal of the year. Three consecutive Brahmas penalties put the Mudbugs on the powerplay for nearly six minutes straight toward the end of the period, but Bossier-Shreveport couldn't capitalize and the game was tied at one after one.
The game stayed even for much of the second period until the Mudbugs were able to retake the lead. A back-checking Kevin Labatte picked up the puck in his own zone and made a pass ahead for Brett Smith, who used his speed to create a two-on-one break with Chris Brassard down low. Brassard buried Smith's pass to put Bossier-Shreveport back on top at 13:37. The Mudbugs appeared to be set to take that lead into the third period before committing back to back penalties that set Texas up on two late-period powerplays. The Brahmas converted both times in the final minute, with Scott Sheppard finding the net at 19:08 and Grant Jacobsen following suit at 19:40 to put Texas on top by a goal after two periods.
The Brahmas continued to pour it on in early in the third period with Jordan Cameron's rebound goal that chased Ken Carroll from the net and Blair Manning's powerplay tip-in past John DeCaro that gave Texas a 5-2 lead. Mark Carragher finished the scoring late in the third, stealing the puck right in front of the net and scoring on a second-chance to provide the final margin of 6-2. The loss is Bossier-Shreveport's first since falling 5-2 in Colorado on December 8th, ending a streak of 24 consecutive games without a regulation loss.
Carroll made 12 saves in the loss, his first in 14 decisions, falling to 14-4-1 on the season. DeCaro stopped 10 of 12 shots in the third period after relieving Carroll. Brett Jaeger made 27 saves as the Mudbugs outshot Texas 29-28 for the night. Texas finished up 3 for 9 on the powerplay, while Bossier-Shreveport converted 1 of 9 chances.
The Mudbugs and Brahmas will now turn around and head to North Richland Hills, Texas for the second game of this home-and-home series. Sunday afternoon at the NyTex Sports Centre, Bossier-Shreveport and Texas will meet once again at 3:05 pm. The game will be broadcast on 1130 AM KWKH with pregame coverage beginning at 2:45 and will be shown on the CHL Network.
