Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - The Stockton Ports ended their 23-inning scoreless drought on Saturday night. That was about the only positive element that they could take away from a 9-1 loss to the Visalia Rawhide at Banner Island Ballpark. With the loss, the Ports have now dropped nine straight contests to Visalia and have still not beaten the Rawhide since April 26th.

Ports starter Casey Meisner (0-1) got off to a fast start as he retired the first 12 batters he faced to open the contest. The stretch was broken up to begin the fifth, however, when Daniel Palka hit an opposite-field solo home run to open the frame and give the Rawhide a 1-0 lead. After two walks and a single loaded the bases with nobody out following the home run, Meisner was lifted for Sam Bragg. Jose Queliz hit a sac-fly to center to advance the two lead runners and Fidel Pena grounded out to second to bring in a third run and give the Rawhide a 3-0 lead.

Meisner suffered the loss, going four-plus innings and allowing three runs on two hits while walking two.

Visalia starter Troy Marks (1-0), making a spot-start after being called up from Hillsboro of the Northwest League, pitched around a double in the third and fourth innings to keep the Ports out of the run column. In the fifth, B.J. Boyd opened the inning with a double, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an RBI groundout by Trent Gilbert to give the Ports their only run of the contest and their first run since Wednesday night.

Marks would go on to earn the win, however, going five innings and allowing one run on three hits while striking out one.

The Rawhide got the lead back in the sixth. With one out, Jamie Westbrook singled and Palka followed with an RBI double to make it a 4-1 game. The run was the only tally allowed by Bragg in two innings of relief.

Sam Roberts came on to pitch the seventh and gave up a leadoff single to Domingo Leyba. Two batters later, Pena singled to put runners at the corners and a wild pitch would score Leyba to make it a 5-1 game. It was the only run allowed by Roberts in his lone inning of work.

Visalia put the game away in the eighth. With one out, Ports reliever Trevor Bayless gave up a single to Kevin Cron followed by a walk to Gerson Montilla. After Leyba singled to load the bases, Queliz delivered a two-run single to left to increase the Visalia lead to 7-1. Pena followed with a groundrule RBI double to right that plated another run and knocked Bayless from the contest. Ben Bracewell came on in relief and yielded a sac-fly to Mitch Haniger that made it a 9-1 contest.

Bayless allowed four runs on four hits in one-third of an inning of work.

Visalia's bullpen, a combination of Bud Jeter, Cody Geyer and Tom Jameson, combined for four scoreless innings of relief down the stretch.

The Ports and Rawhide wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at Banner Island Ballpark. Daniel Mengden (4-3, 4.60 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Visalia right-hander Brandon Sinnery (4-0, 3.10 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
