Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - Rancho Cucamonga continued its home dominance against Lake Elsinore on Saturday night, defeating the Storm 9-4 at LoanMart Field for their third straight win.

With 3,415 fans in attendance, the Quakes (25-23, 66-52) grabbed the early lead against starter Brad Wieck (1-5). Alex Verdugo sparked the first-inning rally with a single to right field. Johan Mieses walked, placing runners at first and second. Cody Bellinger singled to right, scoring Verdugo. During the play, Bellinger became involved in a rundown between first and second as Mieses hustled home. Mieses dove ahead of the tag attempt by catcher Ryan Miller, giving his club a 2-0 edge.

Rancho Cucamonga added to that margin in the second against Wieck. Kyle Garlick doubled to right field. Tyler Ogle followed with a two-bagger of his own, plating Garlick. Tim Locastro doubled to left field, chasing Ogle home for a 4-0 advantage.

Lake Elsinore (12-36, 43-75) was able to get to Quakes' starter John Richy (10-5) in the third inning. Gabriel Quintana clubbed a solo homer to center field for his team-leading 11th of the season. Felipe Blanco later launched a solo shot to left field for his second of the year, trimming the deficit to 4-2.

The Quakes immediately answered in the bottom of the third. Bellinger was hit by a pitch and Jacob Scavuzzo walked against Wieck. Garlick slugged a three-run homer to right-center field for his first long ball in a Rancho Cucamonga uniform, staking his club to a 7-2 cushion.

The Storm would get a run back against Richy in the fifth inning. Quintana led off the frame with a single. Ricardo Valenzuela reached on a fielder's choice groundout. Blanco singled to right field and Donavan Tate walked, loading the bases. Auston Bousfield's infield single up the third base line scored Valenzuela, making it a 7-3 contest.

Richy lasted six innings while earning the victory, allowing three runs, eight hits and a walk while striking out five. The right-hander from Golden, CO becomes the second California League pitcher to reach ten wins on the season, joining Modesto's Harrison Musgrave atop the circuit in that category.

Rancho Cucamonga would add some insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mieses singled against Wieck to open the inning and stole second base. Garlick walked. Paul Hoenecke singled to right field, chasing Mieses home and forcing Wieck to exit the game. With Bryan Verbitsky on in relief, Ogle singled to left field, driving in Garlick for a 9-3 lead.

Lake Elsinore drew a run closer in the eighth inning right-hander Josh Sborz, making his High-A debut. Chase Jensen led off the inning with a single and advanced to second and third on consecutive groundouts. With Blanco at the plate, a wild pitch by Sborz allowed Jensen to hustle home, cutting the margin to 9-4.

Sborz worked around a ninth inning single by the Storm to preserve the victory for the Quakes.

With the win, Rancho Cucamonga remains perfect against Lake Elsinore at LoanMart Field this season, going 14-0 against the San Diego Padres' affiliate at 8408 Rochester Avenue. They have now won seven straight meetings against the Storm.
