Modesto Nuts News Release
Modesto, CA. - A leadoff single in the ninth ended the Modesto Nuts' no-hit bid, but they hung on to beat the Bakersfield Blaze 1-0 on Saturday night at John Thurman Field.
Alex Balog (W, 2-5) turned in 7.2, hitless innings before being lifted because of his pitch count in the eighth. Balog walked three and struck out seven as he dominated the Blaze (48-70; 22-26). Matt Pierpont took the mound in the eighth and struck out the only batter he faced.
In the ninth, Matt Carasiti (S, 18/20) entered to close out the win for the Nuts (62-56; 29-19). Tim Lopes led off the ninth with a soft, groundball single to end the no-hit bid. Chantz Mack followed with a bouncing single through the right side of the infield. Austin Wilson was plunked by a fastball to load the bases. Carasiti settled in from there getting a line drive out before striking out the final two hitters he faced.
The lone run in the game scored in the fourth against Blaze starter Ryan Yarbrough (L, 2-6). With two outs, Ryan McMahon cracked a double and scored on Ashley Grater's RBI single. Yarbrough tossed four innings and struck out six in his return from the DL.
