San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE, CA - Lancaster's Keegan Yuhl tossed seven scoreless innings and the JetHawks withstood a San Jose rally in the bottom of the ninth to post a 3-1 victory over the Giants on Saturday evening at Municipal Stadium. San Jose (58-60) was held to five hits in the loss as the Giants and JetHawks have now split the first two games of the series.

Yuhl (4-0) lowered his California League ERA to 1.41 after limiting San Jose to three singles and no runs over his seven-inning masterpiece. The right-hander walked three and struck out four.

Jose Reyes started on the mound for the Giants and retired the first eight Lancaster batters he faced before running into trouble with two outs in the top of the third. Marc Wik doubled to deep left center to give the JetHawks their first baserunner of the night before James Ramsay smacked an RBI double down the right field line to make it 1-0. Alex Bregman followed with a single into center to plate Ramsay for a 2-0 advantage. The rally continued with a Derek Fisher double - the fourth straight Lancaster hit - putting runners on second and third, however Reyes induced the next batter, Chase McDonald, to fly out to end the inning.

Reyes then escaped a bases loaded, one out jam in the top of the fifth to keep the deficit at two runs. With three runners on base and one down, McDonald flied out to deep right field. All three runners tagged up on the play and San Jose right fielder Tyler Horan threw out the trail runner, Fisher, at second base to end the inning. The out was recorded just prior to the lead runner, Ramsay, crossing the plate, so no runs scored in the frame. Reyes then finished his outing with a 1-2-3 top of the sixth.

The Giants, however, could manage no offense against Yuhl. Seth Harrison and Brandon Bednar produced back-to-back one-out singles in the bottom of the third, but Jeff Kobernus popped out and Skyler Stromsmoe grounded out to end the threat. A one-out walk to Angel Villalona in the fourth and a one-out walk to Stromsmoe in the sixth yielded no results. In the seventh, Horan singled with one out - San Jose's first hit since the third inning - but he was eventually caught stealing at second.

Dan Slania (2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 SO) struck out four batters over the seventh and eighth innings to keep the score at 2-0 before the JetHawks added an insurance run in the top of the ninth against Ian Gardeck (1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO). Sean McMullen led off with a single before moving to second on Mott Hyde's sacrifice bunt. After Wik reached on an infield single advancing McMullen to third, Ramsay hit a sacrifice fly to left for a 3-0 cushion.

The Giants then rallied in the bottom of the ninth scoring once to break-up the shutout, but ultimately falling short in their comeback effort. Stromsmoe walked to start the frame before Aramis Garcia blooped a single into shallow left putting runners on first and second. Villalona followed with a line drive single into center plating Stromsmoe to cut the lead to 3-1. However, Garcia attempted to advance to third on the hit and was easily thrown out by the center fielder Ramsay for the first out of the inning. Carbonell then popped out to the catcher before new pitcher Jordan Mills retired Horan, who represented the potential tying run, on a fly out to the warning track in left ending the game.

Mills, who faced just one batter, earned his first save of the season.

Reyes (3-5) was saddled with the loss after surrendering two runs (both earned) on six hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out four.
