Rawhide Rally To Win 7-5

July 7, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

The Visalia Rawhide used a big sixth inning to break a tie to take control of the game, and then fought off a late Mavericks rally to win 7-5 Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium.

The first five innings of the night were owned by the pitchers, as Maikel Cleto of the Mavs and Visalia's Charles Brewer had each limited the opposing team to one run and two hits.

The game turned in the sixth when the Rawhide loaded the bases with one out. After Cleto struck out Marc Krauss, Alfredo Marte lined a single to right field to give the Rawhide a 2-1 lead.

Josh Ford stepped up next and sent a line drive to deep left field. The ball just eclipsed the top of the fence as well as Jake Shaffer's outstretched glove, resulting in a grand slam and a 6-1 lead.

After the Rawhide added another run in the seventh, the Mavs looked buried.

If overcoming a six-run deficit in the ninth wasn't enough, the Rawhide brought in All-Star closer Bryan Woodall.

The Mavs refused to go down quietly against Woodall, putting up four runs and getting the tying runs on base. Denny Almonte knocked a two-run double to cut the deficit to 7-3. After Trevor Coleman drew a walk, Hawkins Gebbers drove in Almonte with a single.

Kyle Seager kept the rally alive with another RBI single. Seager had been 0-for-3, but with the hit he extended hit streak to 15 games.

With the tying runs on base, Woodall regrouped and got Shaffer to ground out to end the. Woodall had allowed four runs in 35 innings this season before allowing four in the ninth alone.

The Rawhide's win sealed up a well-deserved victory for starting pitcher Charles Brewer, who turned in seven electric innings. Brewer (2-1) surrendered just one run on three hits. He walked one and struck out five.

Cleto (2-4) pitched much better than his final line indicated, but picked up the loss. He ended up being charged with six runs over 5.2 innings, walking three with five strikeouts.

Now losers of three straight and four of the last five, the Mavs will look to notch a win Thursday night against the Rawhide at 7:05 p.m. It's another Skidmarks Roadside Cafe Thirsty Thursday, with all beers on sale for $2 from 6:05 p.m. until the end of the fifth inning.
