July 7, 2010 - California League (CalL1)
San Jose Giants News Release

Bakersfield's Erik Morrison hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the third inning and the Blaze bullpen held the Giants to only one run over the last five innings in a 9-7 victory over San Jose on Tuesday evening at Sam Lynn Ballpark. Bakersfield pounded out 14 hits and scored seven two-outs runs over the first three frames to take the series rubber game. With the loss, San Jose has dropped 10 out of their first 13 games of the second half.

Jose Flores (3-for-5, 2 RBI) and Francisco Peguero (3-for-5, 2B, RBI) each collected three hits while Juan Perez (2-for-5, HR, RBI) hit his eighth home run of the season to lead the Giants offensive attack. Wendell Fairley (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) and Johnny Monell (2-for-4) also finished with multi-hit games at the plate. Both clubs ended the night with 14 hits.

San Jose enjoyed a 4-1 lead after the top of the second, however the Blaze scored six runs - five of which were unearned - over the next two innings to take the lead for good. In the bottom of the second, Tommy Mendonca singled with one out before advancing to third on Andres James' two-out single. A wild pitch uncorked by Kyle Nicholson scored Mendonca and then David Paisano reached on a throwing error committed by shortstop Joel Weeks to bring home James. Jacob Kaase followed with an RBI single to right field tying the game at 4-4.

The Giants temporarily reclaimed the lead in the top of the third inning as Monell singled with one out before Michael Sandoval drew a walk and Flores singled to load the bases. Weeks then delivered a sacrifice fly to left plating Monell to make it 5-4.

In the bottom of the third, Mike Bianucci reached base safely when his one-out pop-up to shortstop was dropped by Weeks for an error. Mendonca then singled with two outs before Morrison stepped to the plate and belted a three-run homer to deep center field. The blast gave Bakersfield their first lead of the evening at 7-5.

Each team scored a single run in the fourth inning as Fairley led off the top half with a double and came home on Peguero's single. Peguero advanced to second on throw, but was promptly thrown out at third base attempting to steal.

In the bottom of the inning, consecutive singles from Paisano and Kaase started the frame before John Whittleman's sacrifice fly two batters later.

Bakersfield added a run in the sixth inning to extend their lead to 9-6 as Paisano singled with one out, advanced to third on Kaase's double off the fence in right and scored when Miguel Velazquez singled up the middle.

Nicholson (5-6) suffered the loss for the Giants after surrendering nine runs (four earned) on 12 hits over 5 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out two and walked none.

San Jose closed to within 9-7 in the top of the seventh as Monell and Sandoval drew consecutive two-out walks before Flores lined an RBI single to left. However, new pitcher Corey Young struck out the next hitter, Weeks, on three pitches to get out of the inning.

In the top of the eighth, Fairley drew a one-out walk and Michael Ambort singled with two outs bringing the potential go-ahead run to the plate, but Young induced Charlie Culberson to fly out to center field. The Giants were then retired 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth with Mark Hamburger recording the final two outs of the contest.

Reliever Tim Murphy (2-1) earned the victory after tossing 3 2/3 innings with one run and two hits allowed. At one point, Murphy retired nine consecutive hitters until issuing the seventh-inning walk to Monell. Hamburger was credited with his 12th save of the year.

San Jose initially took a 1-0 lead when Perez led off the game with a home run to deep left field. Bakersfield drew even in the bottom of the inning on Whittleman's two-out, RBI single before the Giants scored three times in the second. Monell led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Flores' one-out single. With two outs, Perez singled sharply into right field and when the ball was mishandled by Velazquez for an error, Flores scored the second run of the frame. Perez later scored on Fairley's infield single to shortstop giving the Giants a 4-1 advantage.

Blaze starter Joe Wieland was roughed up for 11 hits and six runs (all earned) over three-plus innings. The bullpen trio of Murphy, Young and Hamburger combined for six innings with just one run and three hits allowed.
