THE SAN JOSE GIANTS... continue their road trip this evening with the opener of a three-game series against the Stockton Ports at Banner Island Ballpark. San Jose dropped two out of three games to the host Bakersfield Blaze in their most recent series. After claiming a 13-1 decision in the opener last Sunday, San Jose suffered a 4-3 loss on Monday before a 9-7 defeat last night. In yesterday's contest, Bakersfield's Erik Morrison hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the bottom of the third while the Blaze bullpen held the Giants to a single run over the final five innings of the contest. Francisco Peguero and Jose Flores each collected three hits to lead San Jose offensively. Starter Kyle Nicholson suffered the loss after surrendering nine runs (four earned) on 12 hits over 5 1/3 innings.

Media Coverage... All three games from Stockton will be televised live on Comcast Hometown Network, Channel 104. Additionally, the entire series can be heard live on www.sjgiants.com.

Slow Start To The Second Half... The Giants enter tonight's game with a 3-10 record in the second half - last in the North Division. Five of San Jose's 10 second half defeats have been by one run while three others have been by two runs. Among their last six losses, the Giants have failed to hold a seventh-inning lead once, an eighth-inning lead twice and a ninth-inning lead once. Prior to the All-Star break, San Jose had won eight out of nine games.

Giants-Ports Series Notes... This series marks San Jose's first meeting against Stockton since splitting a four-game set from May 26-29 at Banner Island Ballpark. The Giants were 5-5 versus the Ports before the All-Star break. Beginning tonight, the clubs will meet 16 times in the second half.

Sandoval Added To Roster, Biery Placed On Disabled List... The Giants added third baseman Michael Sandoval to their roster yesterday. Sandoval, the older brother of former San Jose and current San Francisco Giant Pablo Sandoval, had yet to play in a game this season before last night. The 28-year old was on Richmond's (AA) disabled list prior to joining the Giants. Last season, Sandoval played for the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League and hit .291 with three home runs and 23 RBI's in 57 games. Sandoval last played affiliated baseball with the Minnesota Twins organization (High-A Fort Myers) in 2004. He owned a career minor league batting average of . 264 with 29 home runs and 259 RBI's in 507 games entering 2010. Sandoval signed with San Francisco as a free agent prior to the 2010 season. Drew Biery (throat contusion) was placed on the disabled list yesterday.

San Jose Wins League Record Sixth Consecutive First Half Title... The San Jose Giants have won their California League record sixth consecutive first half North Division title. The Giants finished the first half with a 45-25 mark - eight games ahead of both the Modesto Nuts (37-33) and Visalia Rawhide (37-33). By virtue of winning the first half, San Jose secures a berth in the playoffs and will receive a first round bye. The Giants have won three league championships (2005, 2007, 2009) in the last five seasons and will be attempting to win back-to-back titles for the first time in franchise history this September. San Jose will open the playoffs on Saturday, September 11 at Municipal Stadium with Game One of the best-of-five North Division Series. The previous league record for consecutive first half division titles was three (Visalia).

Fairley's Big Series... Left fielder Wendell Fairley enjoyed a big series at the plate against Bakersfield. In the three games, Fairley was 8-for-14 (.571) with five doubles to raise his season batting average to .294. He entered the series with only four doubles all season in 62 games.

Culberson On The Leaderboard... Second baseman Charlie Culberson is currently second in the California League in doubles (26) and tied for third in extra-base hits (40). He's also batting .392 over his last 22 games.

Another Late-Inning Comeback... Last Friday's come-from-behind victory over Lancaster gave San Jose their eighth win this season when trailing after seven innings - tops in the California League. The Giants have also won a league-best four games when trailing after eight innings. San Jose now has seven walk-off victories this season.

Giants In The Cal League Rankings... Entering tonight, San Jose is second in the league in batting average (.288), third in runs scored (5.4), tied for fifth in home runs (61) and second in stolen bases (137). On the mound, their 4.05 ERA is second in the league while their .976 fielding percentage is third.

Stockton Ports... The Stockton Ports, an affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, enter tonight's action with an overall record of 37-46 and a 6-7 mark in the second half. Stockton is tied for eighth in the league in batting average (.269) and eighth in ERA (4.77). The Ports dropped two out of three games to the visiting Modesto Nuts in their most recent series. Shawn Haviland (6-5, 4.15), fourth in the California League with 88 strikeouts, is slated to make the start on the mound tonight.
