GRAND CHUTE, WI -- Wisconsin Timber Rattler starting pitcher Juan Ramirez struck out nine and his offense provided seven runs in a 7-4 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels Saturday afternoon on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Rattler lead-off batter Maximo Mendez reached base four times and scored four runs and Gavin Dickey knocked in three for the winners.

Wisconsin (13-18) scored quickly against Cedar Rapids starter Mason Tobin. Mendez drew a lead-off walk. Diaz lined a double into the left field corner with Mendez running on the pitch. Mendez scored easily for a 1-0 lead.

Tobin got the next two batters, but left the game with an unspecified injury. Reliever Jordan Towns entered and got the final two outs of the inning. But, the Rattlers pecked away with single runs in the second and third innings against Towns.

Israel Nunez drove in a second inning run with a infielder ground out. In the third inning Mendez doubled and went to third on an error. Diaz followed with an RBI single for a 3-0 lead.

Dickey plated two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mendez and Edilio Colina had reached on a walk and a hit batsman against Towns. Dickey greeted reliever Brian Chambers with a double to center and both runners scored.

Ramirez was cruising until the sixth. He allowed a lead off single, got the first out, but allowed a bunt single and a walk to load the bases. Ramirez would strike out Gordon Gronkowski for the second out and his ninth K of the game. But he issued a walk to Jay Brossman to force in a run. That was all for Ramirez.

Keith Meyer came on and hit Clay Fuller to force in another run for the Kernels (17-17). Anel De Los Santos singled to right to drive in a run and make the score 5-3. But the inning ended as Brossman tried to score from second on the play. A strong throw by right fielder Joe Dunigan cut down Brossman at the plate.

The Rattlers tacked on two more runs. Mendez walked to start the seventh and would eventually score on a two out single by Dickey. An RBI single by Israel in the eighth inning made the score 7-3.

The Kernels added an unearned run in the top of the ninth to pull to within three runs, but Justin Souza struck out Jeremy Moore, who was the tying run at the plate, to end the game.

Ramirez picked up his first Midwest League victory with his work on the afternoon. Saturday also marked the third game in a row in which he had struck out nine opponents.

The final game of the four-game series is Sunday afternoon. Edward Paredes (1-3, 6.64) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Trevor Reckling (2-1, 4.11) is set to go for the Kernels. The Timber Rattlers will be wearing pink jerseys in Sunday's game and as a way to raise money breast cancer research fans may bid on the jerseys in a silent auction during the game. Mother's Day game time is 1:05pm.
