Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - Jake Rasner continued his recent success Saturday night, allowing just two runs on two hits through six innings. The two hits allowed by Rasner (W, 2-3) both left the yard - solo homers by Jordan Renz and Travis Schlichting, but the LumberKings posted three runs in the sixth inning to win their second straight game, 5-2 over the Kernels.

The LumberKings scored three runs in the sixth, all credited to Cedar Rapids starter Tommy Mendoza. Truan Mehl started the inning with a one-out single to right-center field. Joe Kemp walked and Brian Valichka reached base after being hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, Matt Smith lofted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Mehl, and Jose Vallejo came up big for a second straight night with an RBI single to center. After Mendoza gave way for reliever Rafael Cruz, the LumberKings added another run on a Terry Blunt RBI single to center.

Mendoza (L, 1-4) allowed all five runs on the night, working 5 2/3 innings. He allowed nine hits and two walks while striking out six.

Mehl posted a 3-for-4 night with a double and a pair of runs scored for the L-Kings. Vallejo and Blunt each chipped in two hits as part of an 11-hit attack.

LumberKings reliever Kevin Altman posted his second save of the year, just the third save for the LumberKings as a whole. Altman worked a one-hit ninth inning with two strikeouts to end the ballgame.

The win gives the LumberKings their first consecutive-day winning streak this year. Previously, the only winning streak came as the L-Kings took both ends of a doubleheader with Burlington back on April 8th. Their record improves to 12-23, and they are now 6-7 at Alliant Energy Field.

The series continues tomorrow afternoon, with both teams meeting up for a 2:00pm start. It's Clinton Floral Mother's Day at Alliant Energy Field. Right-hander Omar Poveda (0-3, 4.50) takes the mound for the LumberKings against right-hander Nick Adenhart (5-0, 1.65) looking for a Midwest League-best sixth win of the year.
