Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA - Miguel Vega was 5-7 with 3 RBI in two games to lead the Burlington Bees (14-21) to a double-header sweep over the Swing of the Quad Cities (15-20) tonight at Community Field. The Bees won game one 2-1 in ten innings on a walk-off single by Jeremy Jirschele and 2-0 in the nightcap as Vega went 3-3 and drove in both runs. These are the first double-header wins for the Bees this year and game two was the team's fourth shutout win of the season.

Vega got the Bees on the board first in the bottom of the second inning of game one. Jirschele singled with one out, got balked to second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on Vega's line drive base hit to left. That was the only run allowed by Swing starter Jaime Garcia over six innings. The left-hander allowed three hits and two walks while striking out six. Bees' starter Chris Nicoll also worked six innings to set a new career-high and allowed a run on five hits while walking two and striking out two. The Swing scored in the top of the fifth when Jose Martinez drove in AJ Van Slyke with a groundout. Kraig Schambough (1-0) followed Nicoll to the mound and pitched a season-high four innings to finish the game for the win. Schambough allowed two hits and one walk while striking out four.

Matt Trent (1-2) gave up the winning run for the loss in the tenth. Trent walked leadoff man Josh Johnson and Chris McConnell laid down a sacrifice bunt. Johnson moved to second and McConnell reached when Trent's throw went wide for an error. Kiel Thibault moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt of his own. After an intentional walk to Mario Lisson, Jirschele singled up the middle through a drawn-in infield for the game-winner.

In game two, Vega got the Bees on the board again in the bottom of the second. Swing starter Mark McCormick walked JP Lowen to start the inning before Vega tripled to the wall in right for his first hit of the game. In the fourth, Jirschele grounded a one-out single up the middle, stole second and scored on Vega's single to right to extend the lead to 2-0. McCormick (1-2) came out after four innings and got the loss, allowing four hits and four walks while striking out seven. Vega added a base hit off of reliever Jonathan Mikrut in the sixth for a season-high three hits in the game. It was the only hit off of Mikrut in the final two innings.

Bees' starter Matt Kniginyzky (3-2) made a bid for the Bees' first complete game of the season, taking the shutout into the seventh inning, but when Adam Rodgers and Chad Gabriel hit consecutive one-out singles, LH Gilbert De La Vara was summoned from the bullpen. De La Vara needed just two pitches to induce Brandon Yarbrough into a game-ending 4-6-3 double play for his team-high fourth save. Kniginyzky matched a season and career-high with seven strikeouts while allowing five hits and one walk in the win.

The Bees and Swing continue this series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 at Community Field for the 7th annual Community Basket Day. Raffle tickets to win Iowa 's Largest Community Basket will be on sale leading up to the drawing at the end of the seventh inning. RH Carlos Rosa (2-3, 2.64) will start for the Bees against RH Cory Meacham (1-2, 5.57) for the Swing. The gates will open at 12:00 and the game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 1:40.
