Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING - After two consecutive rainouts, the Lugnuts finally took the field at Oldsmobile Park to continue an eight game homestand on Saturday night. Lansing split a doubleheader with the West Michigan Whitecaps by taking the first game 5-3 but falling in game two 8-4.
The Whitecaps broke a 2-2 tie in game one when Mike Holliman singled in William Rhymes to make the score 3-2 in the fourth inning.
Lansing would charge back in the bottom half of the inning by plating three runs. Anthony Hatch led off the frame with his second homer of the year, a solo shot over the left field wall that tied the game at 3-3. Brian Bormaster then drew a walk and was followed by a Jesus Gonzalez single. After Sean Shoffit's sacrifice bunt moved the runners into scoring position, Bormaster scampered home on a passed ball to give Lansing the 4-3 lead. Cory Patton's RBI single pushed the lead to 5-3.
Paul Phillips recorded his fifth save of the year by nailing down the game in the seventh.
The Whitecaps took the nightcap via the longball. Mike Holliman blasted a two run homer in the first inning to make the score 2-0. It was a sign of things to come.
In the next frame, Matt Joyce smacked a grand slam over the right field wall to extend the lead to 6-0. It was the second grand slam given up by the Lugnuts pitching staff this season.
The Lugnuts fought back in the fourth inning when David Hicks ripped a two run double into right-center field to cut the lead to 6-2. Josh Bell followed that up with his fourth home run of the season, a majestic shot that landed off of the fence guarding Cedar Street in left field. The blast made the score 6-4.
However the Whitecaps plated two more in the sixth with four straight singles to end the scoring for the night.
The Lugnuts remain 1/2 game behind West Michigan for the Eastern Division lead. The two teams will play game three of the series on Sunday afternoon at Oldsmobile Park. It will be a Meijer Kids Day followed by Pepsi Kids Run the Bases after the game. First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m.
