South Bend, IN - The Peoria Chiefs and South Bend Silver Hawks split a double-header on Saturday evening at South Bend's Covaleski Stadium. The Chiefs won the opener 4-2 before the Silver Hawks took the nightcap 7-3. With the split the Chiefs are now 19-16 and one half game out of first place.

The Chiefs took a 2nd inning lead in game one when Alberto Garcia tripled to right-center off South Bend starter Cody Evans. The triple scored both Ryan Norwood and Brandon Taylor who had singled. The next batter Jake Muyco singled to right and Garcia scored for a 3-0 Chiefs lead.

South Bend scored once against Chiefs starter Mitch Atkins in the 3rd inning. Leyson Septimo led off with a single and moved to third two batters later when Brian Byrne singled. Trey Hendricks got the Silver Hawks on the board with a sac fly to center as Septimo scored.

Peoria pushed it back to a three run lead in the 4th inning against Evans. Kevin Collins led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout by Garcia. Muyco capitalized on another RBI chance with a single up the middle for a 4-1 Chiefs advantage.

South Bend scored against Atkins in the 5th and threatened against the Chiefs bullpen in both the 6th and 7th innings. With a runner at first in the 6th, closer Ed Campusano reliever Jeff Teasley and induced a groundout to end the inning. In the 7th, Campusano gave up a two out walk and single before getting a fielders' choice to end the game. The save was Campusano's 11th in as many chances this season and Atkins improved to 3-0 with the win. Atkins allowed two runs on eight hits over five innings.

Game two started as plan for the Chiefs too but it didn't stay that way for long. Robinson Chirinos doubled to start the contest and scored when Dylan Johnston tripled to right. After a strikeout, Norwood made it 2-0 with a RBI singled to left.

South Bend came out blazing against spot-starter Mike Billek. Pedro Ciriaco and Septimo both singled and Justin Upton walked to load the bases with no outs. Byrne singled to right to tie the game 2-2 before Ricardo Sosa singled to give the Silver Hawks a 3-2 lead. After a pop-up, Richard Mercado doubled to left scoring Byrne and Sosa came home on an errant throw back into the infield. Ciriaco then singled for a second time in the inning for a 6-2 South Bend lead as Billek left the game.

South Bend moved the lead to 7-2 against reliever Jesse Estrada in the 2nd inning when Byrne singled in Septimo. The Chiefs scored once off Silver Hawks starter Adam Howard in the 3rd when Jesus Valdez brought home Chirinos with a fielders' choice to cut the lead to 7-3.

The Chiefs didn't get a runner past first base after the 3rd inning. Ryan Doherty (2-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief while Billek (3-5) took the loss after allowing six runs on six hits in 2/3 of an inning.
