Dayton Dragons News Release

Grand Chute, WI- Johnny Cueto (WP, 3-1) threw the first no hit, no run game in Dayton Dragons (18-18) history in the second game of a double header as the Dragons split the DH with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (16-19) dropping the first game 9-6 and winning the second game 6-0 in a weather shortened five innings. Cueto struck out eight in his five innings of work and walked two, facing two hitters over the minimum.

Rueben Flores (LP, 0-2) of the Timber Rattlers opposed Cueto in the second game of the DH. Flores was the victim of bad defense and a lack of control. Dayton picked up one run on a Wisconsin throwing error and scored the second on a bases load walk to Mike DeJesus, one of three base on balls allowed in the inning by Flores. The Dragons increased the 2-0 with four runs in the fourth inning, on a three run HR from Mike Griffin and an RBI double by Habelito Hernandez.

The real story was Cueto, who was perfect through three innings and did not allow a base runner until the top of the fourth on a lead off walk to Jeff Dominguez, who was erased on a 4-6-3 double play ball. Mike Saunders reached on a lead off walk in the fifth and was safe as second on an errant throw by Cueto on a come backer by Eddy Hernandez. Cueto struck out the next three hitters to end the inning and keep the no-hitter intact.

The Dragons had been no-hit on two different occasions by the Quad City River Bandits at Fifth Third Field and by the Lansing Lugnuts at Oldsmobile Park. Cueto's rain shortened gem is the first professional no-hitter in the 12 year history of Fox Cities Stadium.

In the first game of the night, the Dragons jumped out in front of the Timber Rattlers with four in the top half of the first inning off Wisconsin starter Harold Williams (ND). Paul Janish, Jay Bruce and B.J. Szymanski picked up back-to-back-to-back RBI hits for a 3-0 Dayton lead. Craig Tatum added an RBI on a ground out and the Dragons led 4-0. Wisconsin picked up three off Philippe Valiquette (LP, 1-2) to get to within 4-3. Valiquette gave up an RBI double to Jeff Dominguez, an RBI single to JB Tucker and he walked home a run, one of three walks issued in the first inning.

The Dragons held the 4-3 lead until picking up a pair of runs in the top of the fifth for a 6-3 lead. Szymanski picked up his second RBI of the game with a single to left and an Eric Eymann grounder got home the second run of the game. Dayton fell apart in the bottom half of the fifth inning, as the three run lead at 6-3, turned into a three run deficit at 9-6. J.B. Tucker got Wisconsin to within one on a two RBI double that made the score 6-5. Tucker moved to third base on a throwing error by Valiquette and after a pitching change brought in Wayne Lundgren (ND), Tucker came home to tie the game at 6-6 on a J.D. Reininger error at third. Lundgren allowed three straight RBI singles following the error as Wisconsin ran the lead up to 9-6.

The Rattlers bullpen shut the Dragons down the rest of the way to seal the come from behind win. Jeff Gilmore (WP 2-0) tossed 0.2 innings to pick up the win and Joe Woerman (SV, 3) kept Dayton off the board for the final 2.0 innings for the save.

The Dragons and Timber Rattlers continue the four game series Sunday afternoon at Fox Cities Stadium. 1410 ESPN Radio will broadcast Sunday afternoon's game live beginning with the Dragons pre game show at 1:30 PM, the first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM.
