Raptors Roar Back in 8th to Make It Two Straight
May 30, 2025 - Pioneer League (PL)
Ogden Raptors News Release
In one of their most impressive performances of the year, the Raptors played their best baseball of the early season - dominating the opening stages before tensions rose as the Wheelers clawed their way back into the lead.
Making his first start as a Raptor, Shane Gustafson was masterful, delivering one of the best outings of the season. He fired six and a third innings, carrying a no-hit bid into the fifth inning before allowing his first hit with one out. All night long, "Goose" mixed and matched his pitches beautifully, sequencing with precision to induce soft contact while navigating a red-hot lineup nearly three times through the order.
His performance helped the Raptors keep their foot on the gas, holding the lead into the seventh. But the Wheelers wouldn't go away - plating four runs in the top of the frame to take a 4-2 lead. The Raptors responded immediately, tying it up in the bottom of the seventh thanks to a Cole Jordan RBI double and a Connor Bagnieski sacrifice fly.
In the top of the eighth, the Wheelers struck again, scoring three more off Cam Edmonson to reclaim the lead and the momentum. Down 7-4, the Raptors knew exactly what needed to be done - and they delivered.
Facing hard-throwing Andrew LaCour, the Raptors' small-ball approach once again paid dividends. A wild pitch followed by sacrifice flies from Carter Mize and Damian Stone tied the game at seven. With two outs and Connor Bagnieski at the plate, "Bags" came through with the clutchest hit of the season - a go-ahead single ripped through the right side that capped off a magical night at Lindquist Field.
Nik Cardinal was called upon to close the door, and he delivered with authority. In an inning and a third of dominant relief, he gave up nothing and sealed the Raptors' second straight win.
After an improbable comeback and back-to-back victories, the Raptors will look to guarantee at least a series split tomorrow night at 6:30 PM MST in Game 5 of this six-game set.
