Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Ottawa, Ontario -- Ottawa righty Noel Baca pitched 8 strong innings, quieting Worcester's powerful lineup, as the Rapidz evened up the series at one win apiece with a 7-1 victory over the Tornadoes at Rapidz Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Things started out well for Worcester, as Scott Grimes ripped Baca's (3-10) fifth pitch of the game over the left-centerfield wall for a leadoff solo home run. It was the second time in three games that Grimes began the ballgame with a homer and the fourth consecutive game in which he started things with a hit. But that would prove to be the only run that Worcester would score. Ottawa tied it in bottom of the 1st, when Jared Lemieux led off with a double off Kyle Jackson (0-1), tagged up and moved to third on a flyout to right and scored on a wild pitch, knotting things at 1-1. The Rapidz tacked on two more in the 3rd on three singles, a walk and a Grimes throwing error, then broke things open with a four-run 5th. Jackson walked Lemieux and Kyle Geiger in that frame, before giving up a two-out, two-run double to Jake Daubert and a two-run home run to Jereme Milons, his second longball in as many nights. Meanwhile, Baca was in command, scattering just 6 more hits over his season-high 8 innings of work.

Baca (3-10) picked up the win and Jackson (0-1) took his first loss in a Worcester uniform. Grimes and Francisco Caraballo both extended their hitting streaks to 12. The home run by Grimes was the 101st Tornadoes longball of the year. Worcester is now one homer shy of tying the Can-Am league record for home runs in a season (102 -- 2005 North Shore Spirit). The Tornadoes look to get back to their winning ways on Sunday afternoon when they send righthander Junior Guerrero to the mound against Ottawa lefty Mike Kusiewicz. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm.
