New Jersey Jackals News Release
Brockton, MA - Following a 3-2, 14-inning loss in the completion of a suspended game earlier in the day, the New Jersey Jackals dropped their second game in less than three hours as they fell to the Brockton Rox 7-3 on Saturday night at Campanelli Stadium.
For the second straight game, the Rox offense struck first. Leading off the bottom of the third inning, Brockton DH Phillip Cuadrado launched his ninth home run of the season to right center field to give the Rox a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, New Jersey tied the score when 2B Marcus Sanders snapped an 0-for-15 slump with an RBI single to plate C Craig Maddox, who had doubled off the center field wall, to even the score at 1-1. However, Brockton countered in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs on a lead-off home run by LF Jud Thigpen and a two-run triple off the bat of C Lee Rubin as the Rox extended their lead to 4-1.
In the top of the seventh, Sanders singled home his second run of the game to cut the Rox lead in half at 4-2. Then in the eighth, 1B Juan Tejeda deposited his team-leading 14th home run of the season into the Jackals' bullpen in left center to pull New Jersey within one at 4-3. Once again though, the Rox offense came screaming back in the home half of the eighth, as Brockton strung together back-to-back RBI doubles to take a 6-3 lead before Thigpen came all the way around from second to score on a passed ball when New Jersey reliever Nick Martin failed to cover home plate. Thigpen's run capped the scoring at 7-3.
Rox starter Wayne Lundgren (11-3) tied a Rox single-season record with his eleventh win of the season. The Australian left-hander scattered ten hits over 7 1/3 innings while allowing three runs and striking out six batters. New Jersey's Ryan Pacyna (2-2) was saddled with the loss in his first start since June 24th, surrendering four runs on six hits in six innings while fanning a season-high five batters.
The Jackals and Rox continue their four-game series on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. when New Jersey sends right-hander Ted Serro (5-3, 3.69 ERA) to the hill against Brockton righty Mike Smith (2-0, 3.29 ERA).
