Rapidz falter in extras

(OTTAWA, ON) June 25, 2008 - Looking to win two in a row for the first time this season and to take a 2-1 series lead against the Sussex Skyhawks, Adam Hawes (2-3, 4.96 ERA) started for the Rapidz against Gary Galvez (2-3, 6.08 ERA) for the Skyhawks in front of a crowd of 2,454 at Rapidz Stadium.

After allowing the Skyhawks to score in the top of the first inning, the Rapidz responded scoring four in the bottom of the inning. The Rapidz put together five straight base hits, which included four runs scored for a 4-1 lead after one inning of play.

Jared Lemieux continued with his hot bat, going six for six in the last two games, with a double to lead off the inning. Juan Infante then doubled to score Lemieux giving the Rapidz a 5-1 lead after two and chasing Sussex starter Gary Galvez from the game.

Answering back, the Skyhawks put together four straight hits to score two runs and cut the Rapidz lead to 5-3 in the top of the third.

After reducing the Rapidz lead to 5-4 after the top of the fourth, the Rapidz added two more to take a 7-4 lead at the end of four innings of play. Jereme Milons reached first on an error and scored on a double by Jabe Bergeron which extended his on-base streak to sixteen games. Bergeron then scored on a double by Kyle Geiger to increase their lead by three runs after four innings.

The Skyhawks made the game interesting by adding two runs in the top of the eighth followed by a towering homerun by Walter Young in the top of the ninth to send the game to extra innings tied 7-7.

The Skyhawks scored three runs in the top of the twelfth inning to win the game 10-7. Yohanny Valera reached on a double, Jay Yaconetti singled, Ron Perodin doubled and all players scored to win the game.

Noel Baca (1-4) was credited with the loss for the Rapidz going four innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits. Matthew Petrusek (3-0) earned the win for the Skyhawks allowing only three hits, zero runs and striking out six in three innings of work. Matt Salvato earned his second save of the season for the Skyhawks.

The Rapidz conclude their four game series against the Sussex Skyhawks Thursday, June 26 at 7:05pm which will be "OC Transpo Staff Appreciation" night at Rapidz Stadium.
