(Atlantic City, N.J., June 25, 2008) The Nashua Pride beat the Atlantic City Surf, 4-2, behind a seven inning, one hit performance from starting pitcher Lance Stevens (4-2), who walked three and stuck out three on the way to his fourth victory of the season.
Pride center fielder Vinny Pennell made a spectacular catch in the bottom of the ninth inning to help thwart a Surf rally, and also went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI for Nashua. Third baseman Jack Joffrion also enjoyed a multiple hit night, finishing the game 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Pride catcher Luis Rodriguez also knocked in a run for Nashua, going 1-for-4.
The Pride used two pitchers out of the bullpen after Stevens, as Adam Piechowski pitched a scoreless eighth inning, followed by Andrew Weimer, who extended his league leading saves total to nine in the ninth inning.
Atlantic City starter Aaron Easton suffered the loss (1-2), lasting five and one-third innings, giving up four runs (three earned), on six hits, two walks and three strike outs.
The Surf received a solo home run from third baseman Gil Zayas, his first professional home run, in the fifth inning. Zayas finished the game 1-for-3. Left fielder Joe Burke drove in the other Surf run on a ground out in the first inning, he finished the night 0-for-4.
The Pride and the Surf will wrap up their four game series tomorrow night, at 7:05pm, when Nashua send Nicolas Suero (2-2) to the mound. Atlantic City will send Brian Rodaway (3-2) to the hill.
