Colorado Rapids News Release
Rapids Stadium Update: The idea of a new soccer stadium in the Denver area first became tangible on Tuesday, September 23, 2003 when Kroenke Sports Enterprises acquired the Colorado Rapids and announced their intentions of building a new home for the franchise that would tentatively be built by 2006. On Wednesday, April 14th, a little over six months later, the team will introduce the architects that will give life to this project and make the idea of a soccer specific stadium for the Rapids a reality. The introduction will take place at the team's Kickoff Luncheon that will also feature the presentation of the 2004 Rapids Players and Coaching Staff.
Double Debut: Rapids fans and Colorado soccer enthusiasts will have the opportunity to watch the home debut of two of the Rapids' 2004 acquisitions this Saturday, April 17th at 7:00 p.m, when Haitian international Jean Philippe "Pedro" Peguero and Mexican international Antonio "Toño" de la Torre take the field against the Los Angeles Galaxy in the team's 2004 Home Opener. Pedro, who recorded 89 minutes and one assist in the team's season opener two weeks ago, is expected to pair again with Captain John Spencer in the Rapids attack. This combination already proved effective with a goal against the Dallas Burn on April 3rd at the Cotton Bowl.
On the other side, Toño is also expected to see action from the first minute of the game, either in the same right back position that he covered in the season opener, or perhaps in the right midfield position, covering for the suspended Chris Henderson.
Zizi's Return: Rapids forward Zizi Roberts is ready to come back into the team's starting lineup should Head Coach Tim Hankinson need him against the Galaxy on Saturday at INVESCO Field. Zizi, who was the most productive forward for the team last year if you take in consideration the number of goals scored per games started, played 45 minutes and scored one goal against the Colorado School of Mines in a scrimmage that took place on Wednesday, April 7 at the club's training facility in Westminster, CO. The 2003 Liberian Soccer Player of the Year reached a 0.6 goals per game-started average, while captain John Spencer had a 0.56 one in the 2003 MLS Regular Season. With Zizi's return to the active roster, Hankinson has an effective four-man forward selection that features John Spencer, Pedro, Zizi and David Castellanos.
Mid-Week Action: A goal from striker Zizi Roberts in his return to game action after overcoming an injury that sidelined him for much of the preseason, and another goal from forward David Castellanos, sealed the Rapids' 2-0 victory over the School of Mines Men's soccer team in friendly game played on Wednesday, April 7th at the Rapids training facility in Westminster, CO.
Mile High Undefeated Streak: When the Colorado Rapids host the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday, April 17th at 7:00 p.m. (MT) at INVESCO Field at Mile High in the team's 2004 Home Opener, the club will be putting its 13 game undefeated home streak on the line (includes 2003 playoff match). The Rapids haven't lost a game playing at INVESCO Field since May 17, 2003 when the team dropped a 2-0 decision against the MetroStars. Since then, the Rapids have outscored their opponents 20 goals to nine, adding 29 points out of 39 possible points with a 8-0-2 record at home.)
Rapids Games on TV: The Colorado Rapids announced their 2004 TV Schedule, which includes a total of 21 games broadcast live. 10 Rapids games will be regionally televised through Fox Sports Net Rocky Mountain. FSN will air a live edition of the Rocky Mountain Sports Report that will include extensive postgame coverage of the Rapids games immediately following the matches. Another 11 Rapids games will also be available for Colorado fans through either HDNet (three games), on national television via ESPN2 (two games), via Fox Sports World/ Fox Sports World Español (one game) or through the MLS Direct Kick package (five games). HDNet has only announced their MLS programming for the first half of the season.
Radio Coverage: The Colorado Rapids and KKFN 950-AM "The Fan", a subsidiary of Jefferson Pilot Communications, announced on April 5th an agreement that will allow all 15 Rapids home matches to be broadcast live on "The Fan". After a three-year split, the Rapids and Jefferson Pilot Communications of Colorado are proud to bring the Colorado Rapids back to Denver's biggest sports talk radio station. In addition to broadcasting Rapids matches, "The Fan" is also the official broadcast partner of other KSE properties the Denver Nuggets and the Colorado Avalanche.
Rapids Pep Rally: For the second straight year, the Rapids will hold a downtown lunchtime Pep Rally on the 16th St. Mall in downtown Denver. This year's event will take place on Thursday, April 15 from 11:00 am-1:00 pm. The 2004 Rapids Pep Rally will feature Rapids Inflatable games, sponsor giveaways, contests, a live radio remote by KKFN 950am The Fan, music, RapidMan, free Rapids prizes, and players and coaches signing autographs! The Rapids Pep Rally is free of charge!
