Last Match

Earthquakes 0, Chicago Fire 0; Saturday, April 10, 2004; Spartan Stadium; San Jose, Calif.

The San Jose Earthquakes played to a 0-0 tie against the Chicago Fire in their home opener. In a rematch of the 2003 MLS Cup Championship, the Quakes applied heavy pressure to the Chicago goal but were not able to score despite playing a man down for the final 17 minutes following a Ramiro Corrales red card. Earthquakes goalkeeper Pat Onstad made five saves for the Quakes to earn his first shutout of 2004, as the Quakes got their first point of the year. Last season, Onstad broke the San Jose club record with nine shutouts on his way to winning the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award. The Fire forced Onstad to make a great save in the 23rd minute, when Damani Ralph connected with Ante Razov in the box. Ralph crossed the ball from the right and Razov struck a fine overhead volley toward goal, but Onstad was up to the task and punched it over the bar. In the 36th minute the Quakes had perhaps their best chance of the game when Agoos sent a pass to a streaking Dwayne De Rosario on the left side. De Rosario dribbled to the end line before crossing the ball into the middle of the box where an open Landon Donovan drove a volley that sailed just over the crossbar. As the match wore on, the tension rose and tempers flared. For the second straight week, San Jose was left with 10 men after Corrales was dispatched after a tackle on Andy Williams. Despite the disadvantage, Donovan came close to drawing a penalty kick with 12 minutes left. He had Fire defender Evan Whitfield beaten and seemingly went down with a tug to the shirt, but no penalty was called.

Last Match vs. New England

Earthquakes 2, Revolution 1; Saturday, September 7, 2003; Spartan Stadium; San Jose, Calif.

The San Jose Earthquakes recovered from a 1-0 deficit with goals from Dwayne De Rosario and Landon Donovan to earn a 2-1 win over the New England Revolution at Spartan Stadium. The Revolution struck first in the 40th minute on a goal by Pat Noonan. Steve Ralston controlled the ball in midfield and then slotted a ball through for Noonan to the left of Quakes goalkeeper Pat Onstad. As Onstad came out to cut off the angle, Noonan pushed the ball past Onstad into the empty net for a 1-0 lead. The Quakes responded one minute later as De Rosario netted his first goal of the season on a pass from Mullan. Jeff Agoos found Mullan on the right wing and Mullan beat Joey Franchino before sending a low cross to De Rosario in front of the net. De Rosario took a touch and sent the ball past Brown into the upper part of the net to even the game at 1-1. Seven minutes into the second half, Donovan netted the game-winner from 10 yards out. De Rosario started the play by finding Ramiro Corrales, who then served a ball from the left wing to the back post to Donovan. Donovan powered a header on goal but Brown made the save. The rebound fell to Ekelund and he tipped it to Donovan, who slotted the ball past Brown. The Revolution went down a man in the 83rd minute after an altercation between Rusty Pierce and Mullan. Mullan came in hard and fouled Pierce and the Revolution defender retaliated by throwing Mullan to the ground. Mullan was shown a yellow card, while Pierce received his second yellow and was sent off.

In the Quakes season-opener on April 3, Craig Waibel was ejected for a hard foul. Corrales received the fifth red card of his career and the third of his San Jose career, tying him with current assistant coach John Doyle for the most red cards received in Earthquakes history.

Hart was acquired by the Earthquakes in a trade with Colorado on Feb. 23, 2004.

Cochrane Returns To Action

Earthquakes 2004 first round pick Ryan Cochrane participated in his first full practice since March 19 surgery on his left knee. Cochrane went through the Quakes optional workout on Monday in his first action since tearing the meniscus in his left knee in the Quakes 2-1 preseason loss to the Los Angeles Galaxy on March 12.

Different For Dunivant

In his rookie season last year, Quakes defender Todd Dunivant started and scored in San Jose's first game of the year en route to playing in all 30 games and racking up 2,778 minutes in the regular season, leading the Quakes and playing the most minutes of any field player in MLS. The 2004 season has been different, as the Stanford product has yet to see action in the 2004 regular season due to a left quadriceps strain.

Ching Comes Back

Earthquakes forward Brian Ching will make his first return to Gillette Stadium since his successful 2003 season was cut short by a ruptured right Achilles tendon on Aug. 16 in New England. Ching was in the midst of establishing himself as one of the most dangerous forwards in MLS through his first 15 games with San Jose, scoring six goals and registering two assists before suffering the injury in the 13th minute of the Quakes 1-1 tie with New England.

Dating back to the 2000 season, the Earthquakes own a 39-2-3 record in their last 44 matches when they score the first goal of the game.
