Mason Kohn recorded his first goal of the season on Saturday, helping the Kitchener Rangers to a 5-4 shootout win over the Owen Sound Attack. Brandon Robinson scored once in regulation and again in the shootout to help Kitchener to victory, and goaltender Dawson Carty picked up his third straight win, stopping 32 shots and five Attack shooters.
The Rangers took an early lead, opening the scoring less than five minutes into the first period. Justin Bailey battled for the puck in the corner, and threw a shot on net that rattled off the post and onto the stick of defenceman Max Iafrate. The overager launched a shot past Attack starter Jack Flinn to record his third goal of the season and extend his point streak to an eighth game. Captain Liam Maaskant also picked up a helper on the play.
Mason Kohn's first goal of the season lifted Kitchener to a two goal lead with 1:14 left in the period. Flinn made the initial save on blueliner Doug Blaisdell, but Kohn drove hard to the net, jumping on the rebound and forcing it over the goal line. The second assist was credited to veteran centre Curtis Meighan.
Owen Sound hit the scoreboard just before the intermission, when Zach Nastasiuk picked up a pass from Justin Brack and tucked it behind the left skate of Kitchener netminder Dawson Carty. Jacob Busch also assisted on the Detroit Red Wings prospect's sixth of the year.
The Rangers led shots on goal 11-6 in the first period.
Nastasiuk's second of the game pulled the Attack even early in the second period. With his club on the power play, Chris Bigras connected with the captain in front of the Rangers net, giving him the opportunity to slide a shot past Carty. Waterloo native Kyle Platzer earned a helper on the play, extending his assist streak to a fifth game.
The Attack took their first lead of the game at the 13:35 mark of the middle frame. Nastasiuk set up the play, forcing a turnover inside the Rangers' zone and getting the puck to the net. Rookie Kevin Hancock pushed a backhand shot over the goal line to notch his first career Ontario Hockey League goal.
Less than two minutes later, Owen Sound added to its lead, jumping ahead 4-2. With the Attack applying heavy pressure at the net, Brack's shot was denied, but Chris Bigras jumped on the rebound and lifted it past Carty for his fifth of the season. Daniel Milne picked up an assist on the play.
Kitchener responded quickly, scoring 27 seconds later to cut their deficit to one goal. Frank Hora's point shot was blocked, however, veteran winger Brandon Robinson collected the puck and beat Flinn with a backhand shot to record his third goal of the season. The former North Bay Battalion is riding a five game point streak, with three goals and three helpers since October 21. Blaisdell earned his second point of the night with a helper.
The Rangers continued to out-shoot the Attack in the second, by a 17-15 margin.
With less than ten minutes to play, Kitchener evened the score at 4-4. Bailey forced turnover behind the Owen Sound net, blocking a pass and moving the puck in front of the net for MacInnis. The Arizona Coyotes prospect chipped a shot over the glove side shoulder of Flinn, his fifth goal of the season.
MacInnis' goal sent the contest into overtime. The Rangers led shots on goal 8-7 in the third period and 36-28 through regulation.
Neither team could solve the deadlock in the overtime, sending the contest to a shootout. The Attack out-shot the Rangers 8-1 in the extra frame.
Robinson extended the shootout with a goal in the third round, and Colorado Avalanche prospect Nick Magyar sealed a 5-4 win round six, snapping a shot high over Flinn's glove. With the victory, the Rangers improve to 2-2 against the Attack this season.
Carty made 32 saves and stopped five of six Attack skaters in the shootout to pick up his third consecutive win. Kitchener (8-3-0-3) has earned at least one point in nine straight games.
