Connecticut Whale News Release
Hartford, September 23, 2004: The New York Rangers' broadcast team of Sam Rosen and John Davidson will join coaches, players and other hockey elite at the fifth annual Hartford Wolf Pack's Golf For Kids tournament at the TPC River Highlands Course in Cromwell on October 12. There are still a few spots open in the shamble-format tourney that benefits The Children's Home in Cromwell.
Rosen and Davidson are not only one of the most entertaining and informative broadcast duos in hockey, they're also the longest running - with 18 years of Emmy-award winning coverage to their credit.
One of the most knowledgeable and thorough play-by-play personalities in the game of hockey, Rosen's roots are in Connecticut. He began his career in 1970 as a newsman for WNAB-AM in Bridgeport. In 1971, he moved to WICC-AM (Bridgeport), where he spent two years as a newsman while also serving as weekend sportscaster for New Haven's Channel 8 (WTNH). Rosen was also one of the first voices of ESPN, calling play-by-play for a variety of sports, including hockey, boxing, table tennis, Australian Rules Football, college wrestling, and college baseball from 1977 to 1988. Rosen began working with former Rangers goaltender John Davidson at the start of the 1986-87 season. The two have worked together ever since.
Davidson, or "JD" as he is known, joined MSG Network full-time in 1986. The Emmy-award winning broadcaster is a veteran of three NHL All-Star Game broadcasts, worked as lead analyst for hockey coverage at three Olympic games, and covered the NHL for ABC in 1994. He was also part of the number one broadcast team at FOX from 1995-1999 covering the NHL's regular season, All-Star games and Stanley Cup finals, and since 1999 has served as a studio analyst on ABC Sports' coverage of the National Hockey League. A former first round draft pick (1973), Davidson became the first goaltender ever to go directly from junior hockey to the NHL. He was dealt to the Rangers in June of 1975 from St. Louis and became one of New York's most popular althletes, leading a remarkable run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1979. Due to injury, JD retired in 1983.
