Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Bakersfield, CA - The Quakes hit a pair of home runs and got another great night of pitching, as they won their third straight game by defeating the Bakersfield Blaze by a final of 4-1 on Saturday evening at Sam Lynn Ballpark.
Jarek Cunningham and Brandon Trinkwon each blasted their first homers of the year, respectively, helping the Quakes start the season 3-0 for the first time since 2007.
On the mound, Zach Bird earned his first win of the year, while Rob Rogers and Jacob Rhame combined for four scoreless innings of relief.
Bird (1-0) allowed a lead-off single to Bakersfield's Ian Miller, but it would be the only hit of the night off the Rancho right-hander over five innings. Miller eventually scored from third on a sac fly from Tyler O'Neill, giving the Blaze a 1-0 advantage.
The lead was short-lived for Bakersfield though, as Cunningham opened the second with a double and scored on Paul Hoenecke's first of two hits, an RBI single to even the game at 1-1.
Blaze starter Dan Altavilla (0-1) was solid, but with two outs in the sixth, walked Cody Bellinger, forcing Bakersfield to make a pitching change. Reliever Brett Ash came into the game and was immediately taken deep by Cunningham for a tie-breaking, two-run homer, putting the Quakes ahead to stay at 3-1.
Trinkwon added a solo homer in the eighth, also off of Ash, giving the Quakes an insurance run at 4-1.
Rogers retired six of the seven men he faced, before Rhame came on to close out the last two frames. Rhame allowed a single in each of his two innings, but racked up five total strikeouts to record his first save of the year.
The Quakes, who had only allowed seven total hits to Bakersfield in the first meetings, gave up just three hits in Saturday's win.
Rancho (3-0) eyes the four-game sweep on Sunday afternoon at 12:00pm, sending Scott Barlow (0-0) to the mound against Bakersfield's Carlos Missell (0-0).
After a seven-game road trip to start the season, the Quakes will return to LoanMart Field for their home opener on Thursday, April 16th at 7:05pm. Opening Night at LoanMart Field will feature a post-game Fireworks Display, thanks to Boston's in Rancho Cucamonga.
