Modesto Nuts News Release
Lake Elsinore, CA. - For the second straight night, the Modesto Nuts' late rally came up just shy against the Lake Elsinore Storm on Sunday afternoon at The Diamond in the 6-4 loss.
Down by four entering the eighth, the Nuts (1-3) received a RBI double from Ryan McMahon who had two hits in the afternoon. Troy Stein followed with a two-out, RBI single to make it a two-run game.
In the ninth, Luis Hernandez (S, 1) was called to close the game for the Storm (3-1) but it was not easy for the righty. Raimel Tapia had his third hit of the game with one out. Michael Benjamin, Jr. had a single and Ryan McMahon added a single to load the bases with two outs. Correlle Prime drilled a fly ball to left, but Nick Schulz tracked it down to end the game.
In his first start for the Nuts, Harrison Musgrave (L, 0-1) tossed 4.1 innings and allowed four runs on six hits, but only one of those runs were earned. Dillon Thomas and Tapia collided in the outfield, jarring the ball lose from Thomas, extending the inning for the Storm. Nick Schulz took advantage and capped the three-run frame with a two-run single. The Storm leftfielder recorded four RBI in the game.
The Nuts had plenty of chances in the game, but left 10 men on base and went just 4-for-18 with runners in scoring position.
Rafael De Paula (W, 1-0) pitched around a lot of the trouble in five innings of work. The Storm starter allowed six hits, just two runs with five K's and one walk.
The Nuts dropped the four-game, season-opening series to the Storm. They will be back in action on Monday night at Bakersfield with a 7:15 p.m. first pitch scheduled against the Blaze. Grahamm Wiest makes his first start for the Nuts. Lefty Jake Zokan tosses for the Blaze. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 7:10 p.m. To listen on your iPhone or iPad click here.
