Ramsey sends Barnstormers to 4th straight loss
August 25, 2006 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
Keith Ramsey and a pair of relievers limited the Barnstormers to three singles as the Somerset Patriots blanked Lancaster, 5-0, in the opener of a three-game series at Commerce Bank Park.
Ramsey (5-6) allowed two hits in seven innings while walking two and striking out five. He was only threatened in the fourth inning when Jeremy Todd walked with one out and stole second. After Jose Ortiz popped to short, Keith Maxwell ripped a single into left field. Jim Burt charged the ball and fired a perfect one-hop throw to the plate, cutting down Todd keeping the game scoreless.
Lancaster moved only two other runners into scoring position the entire game, both with two outs.
Eric Ackerman (5-4) matched Ramsey's success for the first five innings, scattering three singles and not allowing a runner to advance beyond first base. Patrick Boran, playing third base for the injured Jeff Nettles, led off the sixth with a double, and that ignited the Patriots.
Boran moved to third on a sacrifice by Henri Stanley, forcing the Barnstormers to bring in the infield. Nick Ortiz got a grounder down the third base line to drive in the game's first run. Ortiz was thrown out at second, and the Patriots could do no more in the inning.
Somerset chased Ackerman in the seventh. Edgard Clemente reached on an infield single to the hole at shortstop and scored on Travis Anderson's double into the left field corner. One out later, George Sandel doubled to right for a 3-0 Somerset lead.
At that point, the Barnstormers brought Chris Clem in from the bullpen. Fernando Lunar greeted him with a looping single to center, but Reggie Taylor came up firing. Lance Burkhart caught Sandel with a lunging tag for the second out. Boran then walked, and Tom Herr again went to the pen, this time summoning Ross Peeples.
Stanley chopped a single into center. It appeared for a moment that Taylor could get his second assist of the inning, but his throw hit the pitcher's mound and bounced beyond Burkhart. Peeples recovered the errant throw and tried to get Boran. That throw deflected off Burkhart back to Peeples, and the Barnstormers finally got the third out of the inning, catching Stanley in a rundown. By then, it was too late, as Somerset had its 5-0 final margin of victory.
NOTES: Lancaster has lost four in a row for the third time this season. All three skids have come against Atlantic City and Somerset. The Patriots lead the season series, 9-7. Lancaster has only 20 hits in the last four games. Cam Smith (4-6) will face Jeff Urban (2-1) on Saturday night Newcomer John Boker is slated to go for Lancaster on Sunday. Gametime Saturday evening is 7:05.
