Five run fifth sinks Riversharks

NEWARK, NJ - August 25, 2006 - The Newark Bears scored five runs in the fifth inning to defeat the Camden Riversharks 9-5 Friday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium. With the win, the Bears extend their four game winning streak, while snapping Camden's three-game winning streak, and improved their second half record to 18-19.

Trailing the Riversharks 3-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, designated hitter Jonathan Thomas drove in the first run with a bases loaded walk. First baseman Alexis Hernandez followed with an RBI groundout scoring center-fielder Anthony Sanders. Second baseman Matt Brunson scored the third run when third baseman Victor Rodriguez reached on a fielder error by Riversharks shortstop Shaun Skrehot. Right-fielder Will Pennyfeather dove in Thomas with a single, and Rodriguez scored the final run when left-fielder Al Benjamin reached base on a fielder's choice.

After Skrehot scored in the sixth inning on a throwing error by Valencia cutting the Bears lead to 6-4 in the top of the sixth cutting the Bears lead to 6-4, Newark scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh when Pennyfeather (9), Benjamin (13), and Valencia (13) hit back-to-back-to-back home runs giving the Bears a 9-4 lead.

Offensively for the Bears, Pennyfeather, Benjamin, and Valencia each had two hits, with Benjamin extending his hitting streak to 18 games. Newark native Thomas went 1-for-3 with one run scored and two RBI. For the Riversharks, Skrehot went 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI, and center-fielder Dwight Maness went 1-for-5 with his tenth home run of the season in the top of the fifth.

David Shepard (5-12) picked up the victory after allowing four run on 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings, while Brendon Davis (2-5) took the loss yielding six runs, five earned, on four hits in 4 1/3 innings.

The Bears and Riversharks will play game two of the three-game series Saturday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 6:05pm. Pat Daneker (4-7) will make his first start since coming off the disabled list for the Bears against Greg Powell (5-11) for the Riversharks. Gates open at 5:05 to a Newark Bears Softee Ball giveaway for the first 1,500 fans in the ballpark.
