San Antonio Rampage News Release
CEDAR PARK, Texas (Jan. 28, 2014) - The San Antonio Rampage (17-21-2-4) defeated the Texas Stars (27-13-2-3) 4-2 tonight at Cedar Park Center, led by a strong performance from Michael Houser in net, stopping an AHL career best shots to earn the First Star.
Jed Ortmeyer tallied his second-straight two-goal game, and Matt Gilroy added a goal and an assist from the blueline in the victory.
Gilroy opened the scoring with his fourth of the year, assisted by Ryan Martindale. The goal gives the defenseman 10 points in his last 12 games. Ortmeyer laid claim to the next two Rampage goals, earning the night's Second Star, and Vincent Trocheck netted the final Rampage goal in the third. Logan Shaw earned an assist in his fifth-straight game, and John McFarland collected his fifth point in his last four games with an assist on Trocheck's tally.
Gaining momentum with a solid kill against the league-leading home power play, the Rampage went up 1-0 with 5:03 remaining in the first. Gilroy caught a pass from Ryan Martindale, and quickly fired it on net, beating the scrum in front of Texas netminder Josh Robinson for his fourth goal on the year.
The Stars began the second period on the power play carried over from a late San Antonio penalty with 9.3 seconds on the clock in the first. The Rampage killed it off with ease, and would kill off three more Texas power plays in the second period.
Texas outshot the Rampage 19-3 in the middle frame, but were unable to crack the scoresheet, thanks to a phenomenal series of saves from Houser in the San Antonio net.
At the 23-second mark of the third, Ortmeyer scored his first of the night to put the Rampage up 2-0. Shaw sent in a shot, and Ortmeyer was there in the crease to deflect it in past Robinson.
Just 1:01 later, Ortmeyer struck again, this time tipping in a Gilroy blast from the blueline, giving the Rampage a 3-0 lead over the Stars.
Texas had been pushing dangerously all game, and on their fifth power play chance of the game, they cashed in. A minute and seven seconds after Ortmeyer's second tally, Chris Mueller fed Travis Morin beautifully, and the league's top scorer one-timed it top shelf to beat Houser and get the Stars on the board.
But the Rampage weren't done. At the 8:25 mark of the third, McFarland fed a beautiful pass to Trocheck, who wasted no time in burying it above Robinson's shoulder to open up the game 4-1 in the Rampage's favor.
The teams would trade a plethora of penalties throughout the remainder of the third, and while the Stars pulled their goalie with 3:57 remaining in regulation, it wasn't enough. Scott Glennie would cut the Rampage lead to 4-2 with 1:48 remaining, but the Silver and Black held on for the win.
The Rampage finish up the month of January on Friday, Jan. 31 for their fourth annual Pink in the Rink night, as they host the Toronto Marlies at 7:30 p.m. on a KZEP / Bud Light Dollar Drink Night. Individual and season tickets can be purchased at the Southeast Box Office, by calling a Rampage representative at 210-444-5554, or online at sarampage.com.
