Rampage Earn a Point against Toronto in Helmer's 1,000th Pro Game

SAN ANTONIO -- This game certainly couldn't' end in regulation, not with it being highlighted by a symbol of longevity in Rampage defenseman Bryan Helmer.

Helmer became the fourth active American Hockey League player to reach the 1,000 professional games played milestone, as the San Antonio Rampage (22-13-2-4) earned a point in a 2-1 shootout loss to Toronto Sunday evening at the AT&T Center.

With San Antonio down a goal, Matt Murley found the net 44 seconds into the final frame for the equalizer that would eventually extend the game to extra time.

The first two shootout attempts were denied for both squads. The third shooters, Bates Battaglia of Toronto and recently named all-star Joey Tenute of the Rampage, each lit the lamp for their team.

After David Spina's shot caromed off the crossbar and stopped just short of the goal-line, Toronto's Derrick Walser gave his team the shootout victory.

Toronto got on the board first with a second-period goal from Bates Battaglia midway through the frame, but David LeNeveu kept his team in the game by not allowing another goal on his way to team-high 38 saves on 39 shots faced. The Rampage remain unbeaten against Toronto (3-0-0-2, all-time ) and finished their seven-game homestand at 4-2-0-1.

The Rampage will embark on their 14-game, 30-day Rodeo Road Trip sitting in fourth place of the AHL West Division with 50 points. The top four teams from each division qualify for the playoffs, and an appearance for the Rampage would be the first since their inaugural season of 2002-03.

The first stop will be Illinois where the Rampage will meet the third-place Peoria Rivermen in the West Division at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
