Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
KODAK, Tenn. - The Miami Marlins announced a transaction that impacts their Double-A affiliate Jacksonville Suns roster prior to tonight's game against the Tennessee Smokies at Smokies Stadium at 7:15 p.m.
Miami Marlins right-handed relief pitcher A.J. Ramos has been placed on a major league rehab assignment with the Jacksonville Suns. Ramos is recovering from right shoulder inflammation, and he was placed on the disabled list on June 27.
With the Marlins this season, Ramos is 4-0 with a 2.17 ERA in 39 relief appearances. His four wins are already the most he has had in a season, and his ERA is the lowest of any of his three years in Miami. He also has 12 holds, proving to be a solid setup man for closer Steve Cishek. His stint on the disabled list came after he posted a 0.64 ERA in June.
Ramos is a former Jacksonville Sun, and was a Southern League Midseason All-Star in 2012 with Jacksonville. That season he was 3-3 with a 1.44 ERA and collected 21 saves for the Suns. After Jacksonville's season ended, he earned his first major league call-up to Miami, and has remained with the Marlins ever since.
In his 118 major league appearances, Ramos is 7-4 with a 2.91 ERA in three seasons with the Marlins. Ramos was originally selected by the Marlins in the 21st round of the 2009 draft out of Texas Tech.
The Suns roster now stands at 24 active players, plus Ramos on his rehab assignment, and a revised roster is attached.
The Suns and Smokies will be back at it on Monday for the series finale, with first pitch set for 7:15 p.m. ET. The Suns will send out right-hander Jose Urena (6-7, 4.14) while the Smokies will counter with lefty Jeffry Antigua (0-1, 2.45).
Suns fans can listen to Monday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or through www.jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET with the Memorial Hospital Suns Pregame Show on Suns Sunday.
The 2014 season of Suns baseball is presented by EverBank, the official banking partner of the Jacksonville Suns. Sponsorships, group outings, and season / individual game tickets are currently available by calling the Suns front office at (904) 358-2846.
