Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Albuquerque, NM - Max Ramirez smashed two three-run home runs, including one to cap off the decisive five-run eighth inning rally that propelled Omaha past Albuquerque, 12-10, Monday afternoon in the last of a wild four-game set at Isotopes Park. The Storm Chasers fashioned two five-run frames en route to earning a series split and improving to 9-3. The visitors scored 37 runs in the series to increase their league-leading total to 95.
Wilfredo Ledezma took over on the mound for the Isotopes in the eighth and retired the first two hitters he faced before Tony Abreu doubled and scored on a Clint Robinson single that knotted the score at eight. Kevin Kouzmanoff walked and David Lough followed with a double to plate Robinson, push Kouzmanoff to third and put the Chasers in front to stay. Ramirez stepped up next and launched his insurance blast to right field to finish the uprising and the appearance for Ledezma, who was tagged with his second loss of the series.
Tommy Hottovy allowed a run in the bottom of the eighth and avoided further trouble when Elian Herrera flied out to the wall in leftfield with two runners on to end the threat. The southpaw then yielded an RBI hit to Scott Van Slyke in the ninth before striking out Trent Oeltjen and Tim Federowicz with two runners aboard to end the game and preserve the victory in his longest appearance of the season.
Johnny Giavotella's solo blast, his second long ball of the campaign, got the Storm Chasers on the board just two batters into the game and David Lough's first homer of the season, another solo poke, increased the margin to 2-0 in the second. Albuquerque, however, rallied for four in the third on consecutive run-scoring triples by Matt Angle and Herrera, a wild pitch and the first Triple-A home run for Alex Castellanos.
The Storm Chasers responded in the next half inning with five of their own on Ramirez's first long ball of the day and a two-run single by Giavotella that made it a 7-4 contest. Albuquerque answered right back in the home half with four more, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Luis Cruz, to reclaim a one-run lead.
Omaha starter Vin Mazzaro lasted only four frames and was charged with eight runs on nine hits while walking one and fanning three. Jeremy Jeffress took over and settled things down with three shutout innings during which he allowed one hit, walked two and struck out one to earn his second win of the season.
The Storm Chasers open a four-game series Tuesday in Round Rock with right-hander Nate Adcock taking the hill against Express right-hander Neil Ramirez. Coverage of the game begins at 6:45 pm and can be heard locally on AM 1180 and online at omahastormchasers.com.
